Fourth of July was very fun, but I'm getting the result of being in chigger country today. Big swollen chigger bites on my legs!! I'm just very thankful they are on my legs and I'm hoping they don't go elsewhere!!!! I should have come home and showered immediately!

When my parents had an acreage we DID NOT have ANY chiggers. My dad was compulsive about mowing and brush-hogging. My sister, not so much. Her acreage is Chigger-Fiesta Land!!!

We were told when we got chiggers to fill the tub with as hot of water as we could stand, then to add a cup of bleach to the bathwater before getting in the tub. Sounds horrible and it stunk bad but the hot water opens the pores and the bleach kills the chiggers. If you wear contacts, take them out first or you'll have bleachy hands afterwards. It actually worked to help the itch too.

JennyLou, I hadn't thought about a hot towel. That would have been a cheaper route to take. I had to go to get some Benadryl cream. Then I slathered it all over my legs from the knees down because I had so many bites. It's better today. I'm avoiding going outside but that's not hard since it's about a million degrees out there!

Hi everyone-

My poor husband is covered with bites, I just read something that said place a hot hand towel on the affected area for a few minutes, it seems to have given him some comfort...thought I'd share a tip :)

Illinois is soooooo bad when it comes to chiggers. They get in the crease of your legs and around your waist and itch like crazy. I have to also suggest clear nail polish. You have to put something over them to smother them and the polish works great.

May God bless those who love the soil,

Patsy

I really am okay with chiggers, UNLESS they get super friendly and go where no man has gone before. OH that is terrible. Those insipid little heat-seekers!!! I used to pick blackberries too!!! And sometimes, they would bite me in {{{{{sensitive}}}}} areas!!! AHHHHHH!!! Nasty little things. I sure do appreciate my dad mowing regularly!!! He was a good daddy!!! Kept the chiggers away. And lots of other unwanted critters.

I used to get poison ivy, I don't think I'm sensitive to it anymore. I used to get it sort of bad on my arms. I wasn't the kind that got it on my face or swelled up or anything.

OHHHHH! I feel your pain! After picking blackberries in shorts one year and loosing sleep over my ankles being covered in bites, I'm super paranoid! The itch is worse than poision ivy.

Kay's right--clear nail polish does wonders. I haven't gotten any this year, but probably will tomorrow when we go out to the country to visit friends. Second thought, I'll wear pants It's only going to be 95!!!!

Used to get chiggers when I lived in IL. We don't have them in SW WA. But clear nail polish works great!

I have never had chigger bites before- I am so glad that I don't live in an area with them! I have heard they are really bad! I hope they go away soon!

Itchy, itchy! Have you tried the old remedy of painting them with clear nail polish? Campho Phenique - still smells like summer to me since we used it liberally when we used to go to AR for the summer to my grandparents.

Rebecca - I feel ya! I, too, am COVERED in bug bites from the 4th of July festivities. Chiggers apparently find me delicious. I've been scratching so much that I just about tore apart the bathroom trying to find the anti-itch cream - still can't find it!!!! AHHHH!!!!!
