Posted - Jul 04 2007 : 5:19:56 PM Hi Ladies!
Doug and went berry picking today! The black berries (or black raspberries- not quite sure) are ready and more are ripening. There are even some flowers that haven't opened yet to produce fruit. So now is a prime time to go berrying! How about next weekend? Saturday the 14th?

Posted - Jul 06 2007 : 10:09:31 AM I've got guests coming that weekend, but Alee I'll cross my fingers that we can work out another time. I have a shade tent I could bring, don't know how complicated it is to set up, but that would help.
Also I recommend a cool, wet shilly-shally across your neck. If you have time you can sew a tube, fill it with rice, freeze it (in a bag to stay clean) and lay this across the back of your neck and it will stay in place and cool you down too. Several in an ice chest would help keep your temp. down as you work in the heat, change them out as they warm up. Of course, hats and light long sleeves too. This heat is a killer...just heard on the news a someone died in Idaho from yesterday's heat.
Stay cool and take good care of yourselves!
We make a difference. |

Posted - Jul 05 2007 : 5:17:35 PM Alee - my cousin who is my craft business mentor has been trying to get me to sign up for the "Inland Empire" craft show. She's says that's a really good one. If I do, I'll be over there for a while, and I"ll have lots of time to meet whoever's available. |

Posted - Jul 04 2007 : 8:14:46 PM I hope it works out for you! We picked about a gallon and a half today and by next week I bet there will be more than we can pick. There was more than we could pick today, but the heat was a bit intense and Nora got a little cranky so we didn't stay long. We probably only picked for about an hour. And it is on public land so we can pick as much as we want. The go on for about a mile, and a little way down the road is another patch. I am not sure where we would park to get access to that one though.
I recommend wearing the thickest and longest jeans that you have as the thorns are pretty aggressive. Since these are wild plants there are a lot of runners that grab at you.
Do you think it would be unethical to bring my hedge shears and prune back the bush a bit? It is so over grown that it is killing it's own center and some of the runners are non productive. If I just trimmed the edges so that the natural pathways were open- that wouldn't be bad would it? Or should I just leave well enough alone?
