I have been homeschooling for 10 yrs now, and have acquired tons of websites in various subjects..and have cataloged lots of them by subject topics.
Anyhow..since I have done this..I felt that it might be helpful to others to start posting on my blog..... various subjects that homeschoolers might be interested in teaching their children.
So with that in mind.... I have posted information about "Butterflies" on my blog today, along with plenty of resource websites to get you and your children started on learning about this topic.
I know that school is out for the summer, but felt that I could still go ahead and start getting the information out there that might come in handy for others.
I will be posting various topics from time to time on my blog..along the lines of "Unit Study"/single topic resources.
So..stay tuned and check in with me often.

I have homeschooled in various styles with our 5 kids. The oldest is 23. We did a short stint in a local school program which was great for a while, until it had a change of heart and became a typical public school program and not a homeschool support program. But that's ok, we just went back to homeschooling. My last two are finishing up highschool. THe 17 yo is in running start, a program that pays for high school age students to attend college. Our soon to be sophmore age is the last full time homeschooler we have. It's not been easy at times, but I can say that I would not trade the years with my kids for anything. FOr the most part, we have avoided so many of the "typical" teen issues that I see so many other parents dealing with.
It is not for everyone. But with all the ups and downs, the worry about if I was failing them or doing it right, I am grateful that i stuck it out. We don't have prodigy's, and for certain there are gaps, but overall I can say from our experience it worked because we have kids that are being successful in employment, life and are simply awesome people. And that.... the awesome person part, was my only educational goal.
Can you tell I adore my kids?? Teenagers are the best. (How many people do you hear say that?)

I have learned more by being my kid's "teacher" than I ever learned in the schools, so for me..it has been a whole new learning experience as well. I enjoy it alot, and fully endorse it.
Just do your research and know your state's laws regarding it...and find out what types of support groups are in your area...then go from there to decide if it is for your family or not.
You'll know when the time comes.

That is so great of you to do! I am not sure what I am going to do with Nora yet- whether it will be public school, private school, charter school, or home school. But I think it is neat when parents do home classrooms during the summer. I have heard that kids lose about 1/3 of their previous year's knowledge during the summer. Then you have the adjustment going back into school.
The most I EVER learned at school what when my mom home schooled me during the summer between 5th and 6th grade on History. She had me write lots of notes and would quiz me each day on that day's reading. I had missed a lot of school that year due to illness and so had flunked 5th grade history. That summer I learned the whole history book inside and out and I actually enjoyed it. I don't remember any other year where the teacher actually got through the whole text book, which I think is a shame because that leave gaps in the learning.
I know that no matter what we do with Nora (school type wise) we will be doing some sort of educational activity during the summers. I think it is a good way for me to stay sharp and intelligent also!
