I showing my kids line at a local craft/art fair this weekend and the booth next to me was a lady selling clothing for yard/porch geese! I had never seen this or heard of it. She said if I went three states east, I would see it everywhere. Any of you know what I"m talking about? She sells concrete geese to set on your porch or in your yard, and handmade clothing to dress them in. She had Elvis, bride and groom, bunny suits, you name it, she had it. Am I the only one who has never heard of this? |

I think the baskets can be found at the local yard ornament center. We have a small center here in town but in the surrounding towns are bigger ones with everything in them. When I moved, my aunt and uncle helped me and I got them a concrete donkey with a wagon attached for the yard. They called him Peppie and when they passed away, he was passed on to their daughter who still has him and plants a big bunch of flowers in the wagon.
Is it just our area that has these things?

Oh man.. Can you imagine.. ??
i remember now there being a couple different sizes of the baskets. aren't there Patsy? but even the smallest ones are still pretty big..
And they do things with them too.. like add flowers to them.. stuff like that..
My goose does have a hairline crack in her neck..poor lady..

The goose vendor lady told me it's almost impossible to ship the concrete geese, - they are extremely heavy and their neck breaks off when you ship. I wonder how they ship the big concrete baskets ..... or maybe they have to mix up the concrete and pour the mold in your backyard......... |

Tee hee, my neighbor has one of those concrete baskets in his backyard. This is so funny. I guess it must truly be an Illinois area thing. My sis has a goose and so does one of my cousins and also an aunt. I am glad to see one of them migrated to Florida.
Now that you mention it, I might get one of those huge concrete baskets for my yard....hmmmmmmm.

Patsy I was just going to say that not so much down here in Florida..But everywhere in Illinois i've seen them..
& it's so funny.. yes.. they are SO heavy..! about the size of a regular REAL life duck or goose.. & people dress them up.. Sort of like a different dress for each season..
I made such a fuss over them when i was there about 7 years ago that when My sister moved down here..
One of her Girlfriends sent me HER'S!!
So.. i have one that came South for the winter & never went back!
She came with a red.. AND green Christmas outfit.. A witch costume.. & a Sunsuite too!
Although i've given up dressing her.. she gets a new paint job now & then.. But up there.. all of them seem to stay just that solid concrete grey color..
AND!! another thing that i saw alot of there were these MASSIVE huge concrete baskets in people yards too!.. they look like a giant Easter Basket.. like wicker looking, all woven.. but CONCRETE! it's the funniest thing!

I've never seen a concrete goose, dressed or nekkid. Either they never migrated all the way to the east coast, or maybe I'm too young to remember ;) |

Geese are pretty popular here. Though the real ones outnumber the cement ones. One of our neighbors has a painted cement/resin goose and her chicks following. It really is cute. I have a real live Goosey Lucy. I nicknamed her Goosey Lucy when she was little. She is 27 now and she will always be my Goosey Lucy.

We have a couple in our town (Mert & Burt) that have 2 big white concrete geese out in front of their house on a main route through town. They're always dressed up for the different seasons and holidays! It's a hoot when I have an out of town company rep come to the office and comment on them.

I think it depends on your style. I think it could be really cute, but probably not in my front yard! I must say I would rather have a dolled up goose than one of those garden picture things that makes it look you are seeing someones behind as they pick weeds!

Actually, it's sort of "out" in this region (Kentucky, Ohio), well, except for my Aunt Bernie and a few others  About 10 years ago, goose clothing and the like was ALL you would see at craft shows and though I've never owned one myself, we did purchase quite a few outfits for Aunt B. She still dresses hers, and paints it when it gets funky. Well, she's 86, ya know :)

Must be a regional thing. The vendor told me that to the east it's very common and the competition for dressing them is fierce. I truly have never seen one, so I just don't think it's a concept that has hit the west coast yet. |

Hey.....I have one of those geese on my front steps! Lol. I have had it for years and it came with 12 outfits. One for every month. I get more comments on it and I call her Gracie. Okay, okay...call me weird. Right now she is in her fourth of July outfit. White bonnet, stars and stripes dress and she is holding a flag.
I can hear you all whispering now.....tee hee.

Whew!!!! I was beginning to think it was just me that thought it was just a little weird. I'm with you Maria, I'm paring down and eliminating everything that doesn't have a function in my life. We are moving from 1600 sf to 600 sf in a couple of years, so no room for a concrete menagerie in lingerie. |

I've heard of them AND have seen them. I'm what you might call "functional to the extreme" so anything that doesn't have a purpose is off my radar. Including dressed porch/patio geese
