It used to be that women did not leave the house without a hat on. The had all these amazing styles of hats available. I want to revive the tradition of wearing hats...now I just need to find some that I can wear!

I like wearing hats, but I have a problem with "hat hair" - if I put one on, I don't dare take it off until I am home and can re-style (which usually means re-washing) my short, fine hair. Anybody have a suggestion?

I never used to like hats at all. They felt restrictive. Ever since being diagnosed with lupus and being told I MUST stay out of the sun (never happen), I've learned to tolerate them. Since I won't stay inside I've started having fun with them and wear all different kinds. Ball caps when it's really cloudy or I know I'll be in the shade most of the time and wide brimmed straw when I'm out in the sun all day. I've tried cowboy hats and they look awful on me. The flat topped types look much better. Also, this year I've started wearing prairie bonnets. I find that they don't mess up my hair when I work out in the yard at lunch time and so I can go back to work with out fussing over my hair. I only wear them in my yard; they work really well for keeping the sun off my face, ears and neck and you can get them in all different patterns. I have three now.

Michelle-

That would be fabulous! I adore Hat pins! My great-great Aunt Nora had some beautiful ones (because they had to have them!) My mom kept them after Aunt Nora died and I always loved looking at them!

Fun! I have two paper/straw hats for summer. Big floppy ones I just love. They sure keep me cooler and not so squinty. Can't help but smile when I'm in them too, guess I look like a tourist.

I just bought the cutest handmade/handblown glass bead hat pin this weekend. Alee, what would you think of a wedding hat pin? I know a gal who does fabulous beaded things.

Hat pins hold your hat on by gathering a bit of your hair to the hat to keep it from blowing off in the wind, or if you laugh too hard or move suddenly, etc... Very farmgirl bling. :)

We make a difference.

I've been told I look good in hats, but I don't really like anything on my head AND the hats in the women's dept. tend to be a bit too small. I DO have a straw hat I try to wear when I go for long walks (especially now that the temps are over 100!). I bought it in the men's department; the hats were very similar to the ones in the women's dept. except the brims weren't quite as wide, AND they had larger sizes.

My M-I-L gave me a few hats/headpieces from the '40's and '50s, including the most darling little black bandeau-styled creation with a little black veil. I wore it only once, to her funeral. It seemed so appropriate, and it DID add a finishing touch.

Heather-

What a great idea! Thanks for the tip! I have a leather hat that I adore but it is just about half a size to big. I keep thinking maybe I can pick out the seams and re-sew it to fit but I am scared of ruining it! I will try your method first!

I love hats too,
I too have a small head, with some hats you can put in some oh.....hmmm not felt but like a foam stuff you buy in the craft dept of walmart......it's soft, it's not foam, I can't think of the name, but it's by the felt and comes in a variety of colors. Iuse fabric glue and layer it in there till it fits.

Here's a pic of me in one of my favorite hats!

Hardly ever wear them because I can't find ones to fit my big head. I do have a neat leather one, though, and a few football-team related hats...and one that merely covers my face, neck, shoulders, etc., from the sun so I don't have to get any more skin cancer (I have had two skin cancer surgeries already so I should look for some more hats that cover like umbrellas but maybe don't look as stupid. ;-)

I, too, have a small head and it's not easy, but...I buy my hats in the kids department and voila they stay above my ears AND I can see where I'm going. I keep trying the cute adult ones, but it's just not cute when half your forehead disappears and the hat goes to just barely above your eyebrows and it covers half your ears. LOL!!! It's a great look-NOT!
In the summer I usually stick with baseball caps, except then my ears get burnt, so back to the childrens section. Last year I found some cute reversible 'bucket-style- hats in the kids section at kmart. I think I paid 5 bucks (so about 2.50 per side). I also (good lord I'm long-winded this evening) bought a kids sewing pattern that had some hats in it-figured that way I could make it fit my little head.

mommom,
ebay is also a great source for vintage hats, just be sure to ask the seller specific questions before buying. Rememeber, the picture can be misleading. I have bought vintage items that looked awesome & then when I got them, it wasn't as nice. Knowing this, when I sell on ebay I try to point out any & all possible flaws & encourage potential buyers to ask questions before bidding.
But for the most part you will be amazed at the fun hats available there. Type in key words like straw/wool/vintage/color, to be more specific. Have fun shopping.

Thanks Sunshine. I didn't realize that vintage hats were smaller. I'll keep my eyes out for some! Mommom

mommom look for vintage or antique hats they tend to be much smaller. I inherited a lot from my husbands grandmother when she came to live with my husbands mother. Most of the vintage hats fit my children and not me

I too love hats....but my problem is that my head is very small and I can't find any that fit. Most hats cover not only my head but my ears and most of my face. Susan

I am a hat-wearer! I have a pretty sad looking straw one that I wear outside all the time and the exact same one, only in great shape for Sundays and "going to town".(I say when you find the right hat, buy two!) I wear ball caps sometimes, knit hats in the winter and I have a great sort of cowboyish canvas hat for rainy days. I used to work in the accessories dept. at Montgomery Ward and my co-worker would always make me try on the hats; boy did we have fun!

Sunshine I'm going to be on the look out for my kinda hat! I like several styles but I'll keep my eyes open! I'm going to be hat shopping! It would help outside too because I don't like the sun on my face at all!

I like hats too, and I think I might look okay in one, but with my layered hair it would a mess!

I've bought several hat patterns off ebay over the last few months- a vintage Vogue wide brimmed sun hat, another more modern version of that same one (different company), and one with about 10 variations including a bucket type hat. I think they would sell good during the summer at a farmers market.

My grandmother always told me every one looks good in a hat it is like putting a picture frame on a painting it is the finishing touch. People who think they don't look good in hats just are not use to it. Just an FYI from my Vavo

I wear hats almost every day. Ball caps, Aussie Outback types, bucket types, and straws, and while riding young horses, a helmet. I have a haircut that's just made for hats, and they keep the constant sun off my face. I adore hats, and they keep my hair out of my way during my various activities.

The best way to get started in hats is to find some that look good on you. You'll have to try on a lot of them, and check them at different angles on your head. You can put the same hat on the back of your head and look stupid, and then move it more forward and at an angle and look smashing. Try 'em on!
