Posted - May 27 2007 : 6:07:15 PM Not a favorite apron, but a favorite style of apron. All this talk of aprons got me to looking for a pattern for the syle my Grandma,Aunt and I wore when I was growing up. We called it a cobblers apron. It was not fancy. It covered from the round neck to mid thigh. The back was open with one button @ the neck. It had pockets, but no tie. It just hug straight down and was roomy. I have spent the last few mo. looking for a pattern and could not find one. The closest I came was to find a similar style @ Lehmans.com for 40.00!!!! (Grandma would roll in the grave if she though I paid 40.00 for an apron) Finally I just called Aunt Nancy and told her to send me a copy of the pattern. She found an extra pattern and sent it. Tomorrow I'm sewing one. I'm really excited. Now to pick the fabric.......

Posted - May 27 2007 : 07:39:07 AM Fat Mama .. that's great .. i don't think our foremothers minded names like that .. sign of a good cook and hugger!!!
my own grandmother (who died when i was very young .. i barely remember anything about her but her 'nickname' ... Teenie Ma. I got my middle name (Catherine) from her .. and it has been passed down to my grand-daughter and great-granddaughter .. and to my brother's daughter.
I have a favorite that has my precious cousin's initials on it MES (Margaret Elizabeth Stevens). She was my 'mentor' while growing up. She went off to heaven a year ago. It is soft blue with RED initials. My cousin Margaret was so beautiful .. looked much like Elizabeth Taylor (young and old).

Posted - May 27 2007 : 06:10:59 AM My fav has to be the red and white (or used to be white) full apron of my great-great grandmother. I found it wrapped around some kitchenware my grandmother sent home with me. She had no idea, I imagine, that the apron would be more important to me than the kitchenware (which probably had passed down from Fat Mama as well). This particular great-great grandmother was very robust, hence the name Fat Mama, so the apron wraps completely around me (even though I'm not skinny myself) and ties.It has a loop that goes over my head. The cotton is soft with age and almost touches the floor. But it is perfect for me. I think about her wearing it 100 years ago and wonder if she ever imagined a great-great granddaughter who would treasure it. The only problem is that I don't want to wear it out.
