We are planning a beach vacation in Destin. Has anyone been here?

We will have 2 grandparents, 2 aunts, my dh & me, and our 4 children ages 8 yrs to almost 1 yr.

I just want to play in the water and snorkel and maybe take one evening to go window shopping.

My father-in-law is into kayaking, snorkeling, and para-sailing.

My sister-in-law is going to make the trip a challenge as she is on quite a bit of pain meds for her back (degenerative bone condition).

I'm hoping that MY sister gets to come as she needs a vacation after taking care of my dad last year and my mom. (She is the oldest in our family). And she would be great with helping me with the kiddos.

We are driving a mini-van and it will be 15 hours in the van at least. My in-laws will fly due to my s-in-law's bad back. So, I hope my sister goes so we will have a third driver.

The problem is where are we going to put everyone. It's so expensive to rent anything above a 4 bedroom house. I'm not so worried about my older three, but we have the baby to think about and also my dh and I will want *ahem* privacy.

So, I wish that we could do 2 houses. But, oh well. Not going to happen.

Anyway, I'm just rambling. I hope you don't mind. I'm excited about the whole thing. I haven't been to the beach for 2 years and I love going and being in the water.

Rebecca,
It is a beautiful area. My oldest son was stationed @ the Air base in Fort Walton Beach which is near Destin. We used to go down each year. It was great because we shopped @ all the areas Tina talked about. We also went sea kayaking. We rented these from the base and paddled out into the gulf. There are lots of minature golf ,go-cart and bungee swinging (thingies). I don't know if there are any State or National parks right on the water, but if so they're usually reasonable to rent boats or to go hiking.
Enjoy yourself

Well, as it turns out, my mil found a house that sleeps 18 people! Enough room for everybody, plus she wants my other sister to come. : ) Yeah!!

oh it's very pretty there. I live about an hour and a half from Destin.
If you can try to get a drive over to Seaside and Rosemary Beaches..very pretty areas to visit.
and of course the Destin Commons Factory Outlets are a fun shopping adventure if you want to shop til you drop..that and the Sandestin Factory outlets..and of course they have a large Bass Pro Shop for the guys.
But we usually visit Seaside and Rosemary Beaches...very quiet area..and lovely for photographs.
