Has anyone tried this. I've been reading a lot about it and have only tried it once. I am going to have to flavor the oil to make it easier to get used to.

I've been oil pulling off and on for about a year. I use liquid coconut oil because I can't stand the texture change from solid to liquid! I usually do both morning and night because I can't do 15 minutes at one time, so I split the difference. I've found that my mouth feels cleaner, I don't have dry mouth (as a music teacher this was huge for me!) and overall, I feel better. I did have one small cavity "disappear" in the 6 months between checkups...not sure whether to attribute it to the oil pulling or not, but it happened!

I am going to start doing the pulling on a regular basis. I had been doing it only when I felt crappy. The idea of it being a detox for your body is a very good reason for everyone to do it.

I do have one question though... do you do the pulling just in the morning or do you do the pulling before bedtime too?

We oil pull at our house using organic coconut oil and love it! We do 20 minutes with a timer, just make sure that you don't swallow it or spit coconut oil down your drains, cause it will clog them! The wellnessmama.com has great info about oil pulling!

Oh we also have a health food store here that I am sure must carry the organic type.

No Costco here but there is a small Amish market nearby and they carry the large containers for cooking and baking. Would those be okay to use?

Do you have a Costco nearby? That is where we usually purchase ours, but we also tend to use ours a lot for baking and cooking. We usually buy Nutiva or Spectrum organic, extra virgin coconut oil. I suggest researching the different types and deciding what is best for your family. Depending on what you have in the area, prices will probably vary. Amazo is also a good place to buy it, if you hit it at the right times.

I am going to look into trying this. I think I can get coconut oil at the drugstore or does anyone have a certain kind they would recommend?

Good point Shannon, forgot to mention not to spit it in the sink. Yeah the point of it really is to get your ENTIRE mouth. You can only brush so much. I'm not an expert either, but speaking from experience I recommend it to everyone. There's a definite connection between the health of your mouth and the health of the rest of your body.

Denise - I am by no means an expert or real knowledgeable on oil pulling, but my friends that do it say it pulls more bacteria out of your mouth, freshens your breath more, and actually helps fight any tendency towards gingivitis, since it pulls the bacteria out of your mouth, not just your teeth. It has been explained to me that the oil somehow sucks the bacteria into it and chemically bonds so that you can then spit it out. Most of my friends use coconut oil, since it is so healthy for you anyways, but I always get reminded to not spit it down the sink, but rather flush it in the toilet or spit it in the trash can. When cooler than 70 degrees (I think that is the right temp), coconut oil goes into its solid form and could clog up your drain and piping.

I have heard a lot about this but didn't know exactly what it was. So I guess brushing the teeth doesn't do the same thing?

Erin - I seriously had to chuckle at your comment regarding not being able to go 15 minutes without having to talk! I can sooooo empathize!

I have quite a few friends that do the oil pulling. I just have not been able to convince myself to try it. Though yesterday, we were working on Anatomy and we learned that the bacteria in your mouth actually excrete their wastes on your teeth, which is what causes bad breath. I told my kids that the bacteria poop in their mouth, lol. Thinking about that really wants me to do whatever I can to keep my teeth as clean as possible!!!

Yeah it's weird at first. You get used to it though. Honestly for me 15 minutes is the max time, but it's usually less than that. I have three little kids and a husband who's sometimes a kid, rarely can I go 15 minutes without having to talk in the morning!

I start my day with a tsp of olive oil. That I don't mind because I like the taste of olive oil. I don't know about holding it or coconut oil in my mouth for 15 minutes.

Oil pulling is used to remove toxins from your mouth. You put a tablespoon of oil (I use coconut oil) in your mouth right when you wake up. Swish it all around through your teeth for 15 minutes, then spit it out and brush. The oil binds up with the toxins and removes most of them from your mouth. I've been doing it for about a year. I've noticed whiter teeth (and I drink coffee and red wine) and much less plaque. I tried it with olive oil at first but it was not pleasant. The coconut oil takes some getting used to because its solid when you out it in your mouth and you chew it up a little to liquefy it. It sounds kind of gross but it's not that bad. I'm at the point now where if I don't do it at the beginning of the day it throws me off. It's very beneficial as well for anyone using tobacco products.... smoke, chew, pipe (for guys... or girls? idk).
