My mom told me this a while ago, but I didn't try it until yesterday... Use a piece of unwaxed, unflavored (minty-fresh cheese? Yuck!) dental floss to cut logs of soft cheese (like feta) or to cut cakes - stretch it tight between your fingers and just press down.

I haven't tried it on a cake yet, but it made lovely rounds of feta for crackers!!! It sliced them thinner, more evenly and with less crumbling than with a knife, that's for sure. It's much easier to get that tomato to sit on top this way...

I've used it as well to cut cinnamon rolls before placing them in the pan. Works like a dream.

And while we're on the subject of dental floss, there is no better repair "thread" for tough jobs like tarps and tents...even waterproof if you use the waxed stuff.

Reviving an old post...
I like to use dental floss to cut refrigerated logs of cookie dough and cinnamon rolls... this eliminates the flat edge you get when you slice with a knife.

Hi girls. Your dental floss cutting posts reminded me of one of my favorite EASY mouth-watering potluck recipes: Pesto Brie. Just take a round of nice Brie cheese and cut it horizontally in half using dental floss (to make 2 layers like a layer cake)-- this is so much easier than trying to cut a soft cheese with a knife! Then spread the bottom layer with your favorite pesto and put the top layer back on. Sprinkle some thinly sliced almonds on top, pop in the oven (any temperature) for just a few minutes until the Brie just starts to melt, and serve with crackers. YUM!

The way I have sliced a cake (round pan..cutting cake sideways through the middle to make two thinner layers) is by looping the floss around the cake at the middle and then crossing the ends and pulling the loop tight around the cake..works like a charm...sort of decapitates it!!

Another good use for the floss is to cut cheesecake. Hold it tight and slice down with it, then release one end and pull the floss out. Don't try to pull it back up as the cake will crumble and make a mess.

I've heard that you can use dental floss to cut soap too -- never tried it though.
