The book is called "Heal Your Headaches." I found it via the One Spirit book club. I like a lot of his research; what I don't like is the liberal use of meds both to treat and as a preventative. But it's well worth the time to read.

I try to use Reiki and/or polarity as part of my massage, as a matter of course. I generally do it as "general relaxation" or "my hands are going to be very still for a little bit," because a lot of folks around here are very leery of anything out of the Bible Belt norm! My husband teases me, telling me I went from years of selling snake oil (public relations) to voodoo (natural healing).

I'm enrolled in a wonderful-sounding workshop in Berkeley in September. The training is specific for headache relief and teaching others to relieve their own headaches. I can't wait! pj

Paula,
I belong to the One Spirit book club too! I am also interested in Reiki, polarity work, chakra balancing, DNA healing and many other forms of "alternative healing work". .. Although if we are truthful, there is nothing alternative about this, is there? I'm sure our ancestors used this as a matter of course in their lives, perhaps without the current labels, but used it nonetheless. I have attended a few workshops and continue to read and learn all that I can. What is that phrase?... healer, heal thyself?.... In the process of finding what works for me, maybe I can help others too. I do not live in the Bible Belt, but we still have to be conscious of how we breech these healing subjects, as people are so conditioned by the mainstream medical community and the "take a pill quick fix". Getting to the root of the condition makes so much more sense in healing than masking the symptom with drugs. I encourage others to share their experiences and feelings on the subject too.. and Paula, I hope you will continue to share your knowledge... so as strong, intelligent women who use their intuition and wisdom, we can change the world in our own communities, one day at a time.

Thanks for your concern, Missy. Since I wrote that post over a year ago, I'm happy to report that I'm feeling better. Still an ever continuing discovery process, but that's how life is! What I've most recently discovered is that my body does not tolerate yeast foods. So, when I cut that out of my diet I feel IMMENSLEY better. Unfortunately, those are the foods I crave, so now that I'm over that hump I have to diligently avoid those or it's a re-entry period of withdrawals once again. But I've got my mind wrapped around it now, and it's easier to avoid them, especially at home and at work. When eating out, that's different, but I don't do that much and when I'm with the kids they might get Subway, which is generally healthy and I do believe they now have tortilla wrap options, which works! No yeast in those!

May the sun bring you new energy by day, may the moon softly restore you by night, may the rain wash away your worries, may the breeze blow new strength into your being, may you walk gently through the world and know its beauty all the days of your life. ~~Apache Blessing

Clare- I have mentioned this in a couple of other posts, but I would again reccommend the maker's diet book. It was written by a man that nearly died from Chrohn's diseas and was told by doctor's that there was nothing more he could do. He found a naturopath that taught him how to go back to the foods that we were created to eat. He focuses alot on rebalancing the digestive system which directly correlates with our hormones and nervous system. You go through a 30 day liver cleansing by eliminating certain certain foods and then adding them back, but in ways that your body better tolerates: ie- whole grains vs white flour and rice, honey, stevia, and maple syrup vs refined sugar. He focuses on sprouted and fermented foods as well as raw foods because of all the live enzymes that it offers. For me, it made all the difference in the world in how I felt. My mind was clearer and my skin was radiant and clear. I had more energy and less nervousness. I have fallen back a little in what i have been eating, but plan on re-doing the cleansing phase again. I'm not sure if you are a vegetarian Clare, but there are a lot of recipes that include meat. You could probably substitue some of those things with other vegetarian options. Sorry, for being so long winded, but I know it would do wonders for you and is meant for everyone, even if you don't have any health issues. It makes your body stronger so that it can heal itself!!

Blessings,

Missy

Hi! I hope that by now you are no longer dueling with sinus problems...but in case you still are, I have some advise! I developed allergies in my late teens/early 20s and have always tried to find natural, alternative ways to handle them. The best best thing you can use, and I truly swear by this!...is a Nettie Pot. You mentioned that you were using sea salt sprays etc. It's a similar concept, however i have found that using a Nettie Pot provides lasting results. Since I started using mine 2 years ago, I have barely felt the effects of pollen OR hayfever season. Any time I feel like I am getting congested, or coming down with a cold...I have been able to ward it off by using the Netti Pot (not one cold last winter!) I could go on about the benefits forever...but I found a link that explains what it is, and how it works if you're interested. They run about $16. Most commonly, they are white porcelain, and can be found at most natural food stores. At www.peacefulcompany.com they have a handmade clay style that I prefer. It takes getting used to...it did for me...but once you get the hang of it...it just becomes a natural part of your day, like brushing your teeth.
Also, I found that replacing cows milk cheese (not always because what is life without pizza & ice cream?!) with goat cheese is extremely helpful. The protein in cow's milk, casien...increases mucus production & thickens it as well, which can lead to sinus problems. One last thing!...My secret ingredient in every recipe is Cayenne Pepper. It has a bounty of medicinal properties, and in most recipes you can't even tell it's there...but it stimulates the sinuses. Hope some of this helps. Here is the link about the Neti Pot. http://www.spaindex.com/Articles/NetiPot.htm

Bobbi..so glad that you don't have mold!!
I love the book that Citygoatlady recomended and use it too...and we drink raw goats milk. My youngest son came to us (adoption) in November of last year with a constant runny nose, sinus problems galore and since being here hasn't had a minutes problem with that..cleared up in a week..we only drink raw goat's milk so I know that had to be alot of the help. He had been on meds for it for 2 years..they said it was a chronic thing. I took him off the meds and after he had been with us two months took him to an Ear Nose and Throat doc who gave him a clean bill of health..and said he didn't see anything abnormal at all about his sinus's so I had it documented. Didn't say anything about the milk, just smiled.

I drink organic milk but it is still pasturized, so I'll try cutting that out and see what happens. Also as far as the mold goes, I checked into that and the home inspection guywe used said he saw no evidence of mold here.

Raw Cheese:
Oops, I forgot to tell you this.

All commercial raw milk cheese produced in the USA uses milk which is PASTEURIZED to 155 F. for 15 seconds.

The producers or someone have "defined" this as "raw". That's because they have defined "standard pasteurized" as milk heated to 160 F for 15 seconds. And so, if it isn't pasteurized, it is raw (to them, since they know they can fool you.)

And yes, even that nice "raw milk cheese" from the health food store, may not be raw at all in a normal person's definition of raw.

If you want actual raw milk cheese made from milk which is not heat treated, you can easily learn to make it yourself from the book, "Goats Produce Too" by Mary Jane Toth, and available from www.hoeggergoatsupply.com.

Maybe raw milk cheese would be ok for you.

citygoatlady Posted - Jul 24 2005 : 10:47:59 PM
As you said, the problem is not necessarily the milk. It is the PASTEURIZED milk. Raw milk is not one single bit comparable to pasteurized milk.

Find all the raw milk you need from any state on these sites:

www.realmilk.com (are these .com or .org?)
www.localharvest.org
www.eatwild.org
www.eatwell.org

Since all we read says, "problem with cow's milk" you can assume that they are talking about pasteurized cow's milk, because that's all most people have access to.

When goat's milk is glorified, that's only because most goat's milk people come across IS raw.

I like my goat's milk! But raw cow's milk may be all you can find, and it is worth a try.

Anecdotes:

1. My friend had severe asthma all her life. Except while she was a complete vegetarian, but also drank raw cow's milk. During that time she was asthma free.

2. My milk customer has a daughter with "asthma". He gets raw cow's milk for the rest of the family, but for her, my goat's milk seemed to do the trick. After a week, no more symptoms.

3. My relative had stuffy nose, constant noseblowing, hay fever, cat allergy, etc., all his life. Until he became a vegetarian. Then, no more of those symptoms. He does eat some meat and raw milk now.

Bobbi,
I have not tried this myself lately, in regards to dairy products, is to use RAW milk.
I don't think it would make a difference in my case, as I grew up on a dairy farm and that's all we used to have.http://www.mercola.com/2003/mar/29/pasteurized_milk.htm Here is Wisconsin, I'm not sure you can even buy it legally. I know some people "PURCHASE" a share of a cow, to get it legally.
Something else I use when I get a flare up of sinus congestion, I use a mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide and distilled water in a nasal sprayer (cleaned out a afrin sprayer).
Had read about it in the HYDROGEN PEROXIDE MEDICAL MIRACLE by William Campbell Douglas, MD

You know, that may be part of it.. I checked with my mom (the former owner of the house and before she decided to sell she did a full inspection and there was no mold here, so that isn't causing it.. but while I am not much of a milk person, I make our own ice cream, and I eat more than my fair share of it too.. so maybe I'll try cutting that out and see if that makes a difference... but if any of you know of anything else for sinus please keep the replies coming!

I am not well-informed on Rekki, Meadowlark. I suggest you do a search, as I know there are associations and classes offered. What I do know is that it is a no touch method of healing, utilizing the body's energy to redirect/balance for healing. I've been told I have this same touch/energy when I've done a few massages for friends. It is a good thing.

Clare, Please enlighten me on the Rekki method!! I have been told by people I have an "electric or healing touch"... I massaged my Mothers painful areas and she said she felt a strange sensation like a tingling then she suddenly shut down and became fearful and wanted me to stop the touch... what is this? I wish I could use this to help her but she is very closed to it...

Sounds like she was a Rekki practicioner, Meadowlark! "Alternative" methods are very effective, if you are open to them, and you were!

KarenP, I've known about the dairy connection to sinus problems for a while now. Thank you for reminding me. Seems I get in a cheese urge and then forget to back off! I'm cutting out so many other things that cheese has been my treat, but I'm having alot of congestion, so better wise up here... daaaa...silly me.

I remember when I was in the hospital suffering from pre-eclampsia awaiting the birth of my second daughter... I was very high risk in that I had almost died with kidney/liver failure with first birth... My blood pressure was very high, and I was sleepless many nights in that room. The nurses were angels... One in particular seemed to have a special "something". She asked me one night if she could give me an "aura" or healing energy back rub. I said of course and was very open to that kind of medicine... She barely touched my skin , like she was an inch from the surface with the palm of her hands. The energy I felt was indescribable, It was like all the negative energy was drained from my body. I felt energized and comforted, and strong! She told me I had a strong life force, and that pregnant women had a higher energy plaine, and that I would be strong for birthing. She was a wonderful woman... a natural healer. But I was asked questions later by other nurses about her methods... I said she was a caring and compassionate nurse. I still am grateful to that sweet soul in the middle of the night...

The Sinus thing was my problem for many years, I think I can remember being about 8 yrs old and having problems.
Went to a seminar by Dr. Wallach and during the Q&A, I asked about sinus problems he said give up the dairy and cheese. Well, I thought he had told me to fall on a sword, GIVE UP DAIRY? I didn't want all those cheese producers to lose this cheesehead!
But after about six more months of weekly or more often, sinus headaches.
I decided to try it. After about a week, I noticed I hadn't had a headache yet. Maybe there is something to this.Went a month, best thing I ever did.
I have found I can eat a liitle cheese from time to time without a problem as long as it's white cheese. I think the dye in orange cheeses bother too. I don't drink milk any more and that has help alot.
KarenP
Pretty bad, living in the DAIRY STATE and don't drink milk.
If I feel I want a glass, I usually have rice or almond milk.

This doesn't answer the sinus post, but in general I utilize Homeopathic remedies a lot. We have a homeopathic M.D. down the street, so I've been able to learn a lot just by going to the doctor with the kids since they were little.

Also, when my boys have asthma-like symptoms, going to our chiropractor works wonders, and simply stops everything in it's tracks. It used to be things progressed to pneumonia a couple of times until we caught onto this.

I was tested for allergies a long time ago and mold was one of the main ones on my list. I just had the roof replaced, I bet there were all kinds of molds growing between those shingles, and pulling them off would have dislodged a lot of it. Man I hope thats all it is. I've heard that once you find mold in a house it's a real challenge to get rid of it.

Do any of you have any reccomendations for a reoccuring sinus problem? I don't know if it's allergies from all the new trees and plants out here, or if its the new carpet in this house or the old cat pee smelling carpet in the basement but something in this place has set off my sinuses, way up in my nose/under eyes type area. I have been using a colloidial silver nasal spray which does help but I just haven't been able to kick it. I also was snorting up celtic sea salt for a while but that just cleared it for the moment and then it came back.

You might look for a book entitled "Is this your Child?" by Doris Rapp MD. Also another of her books is Is this your childs world? She specializes in environmental illnesses and has a video out about peoples reactions to everyday environmental hazards we might never suspect. Most modern homes are so airtight that they become a chemical soup just from the off gassing of our furniture and carpeting that is so bad it would be considered hazardous material if the epa tested the indoor air in most homes. In our former business we spent 4 years in intensive study about indoor air polution.
With our daughter who suffered migraine headaches from her earliest memory we found she is allergic to the phenals in almost everything from lotions to shampoos and even her skin allergy medicine Rx had it in it. She also would react to the cleaning products used in her school as well as the ink on the photo copied assignment sheets the teacher handed out. Perfumes, air freshners laundry soap perfumed and dyed. New carpeting and rugs as well as a lot of bedding products are treated with stain inhibitors that include benzines which are extreemly reactive and we have no way of knowing if it is even there!
I can really get on a soap box over this one. Our babies crawl around on surfaces with the largest organ of their body (their skin) in constant contact with these toxins, absorbing it through their skin in huge ratios, and we wonder why so many of our little people are suffering from things like ADD and ADHD and other disorders.

Thanks Eileen! I'm going to try and investigate that today! It sounds like you have had good success with it , but I know that as careful as we have been about so many different things, there are other things we have yet to try eliminating or restricting. Caffeine has always been a trigger for me. We went through all the pediatric allergy testing and the only thing he reacted to was mold. Who dosen't? Since the testing doesn't rule out food additives, colorings, etc it's really been a process of elimination and detective work. Thanks for the info, you are always are so helpful!

Bramble,
You can look at these in all their forms online at ecoquestintl.com or ecoquest.com. After looking at them you may want more info just send me an e-mail. I became a distributor for this company and worked my tail off for 4 years because I think it is a great product but the business end of it almost caused us to lose the farm. I still have a membership and could maybe find you a dealer nearby who could hook you up with a demo machine to try out. There is a trade in program right now where you could turn in a hepa type filter to get a good discount on one of these if it helps you.

Eileen -- both my son and I are plagued by migraines and adding more medicine to the problem is last on my list of solutions. Where do you get that air purifier? We tried a hepa filter in his classroom last year and that did seem to help. Now he goes to 9 different classrooms
so that's not working ! It's bad enough that I get them but it breaks my heart that he is suffering with them too. Let me know, it's worth trying at home. Thanks...Bramble

Clare,
have not had a migraine or any other type of headache since we got our first Ecoquest air purifier. I had not noticed this fact until our daughter and her husband came for a visit. She is plagued by serious headaches and has been all her life. She noticed that the headache that she had when she arrived went away and she did not get another one until she got home. She called the very next day to find out how she could get one of those machines.
It turns out that both of us are triggered by environmental pollutants or chemically sensitive.

I have not taken any antibiotics in quite a few years. What I have been using, somewhat successfully (I say this because I have not had a cold in years) is elderberry capsules or juice - the juice I mix with filtered water, and there is no sugar or honey in the juice - it's a concentrate. I also start taking elderberry capsules in Oct. (1 or 2 a day, if I remember it).
I'm not a stickler for being too exact about it. I also try aromatherapy for headaches - mint seems to help. I just found an herb called holy basil, which I have been searching for, for some time - none of the herbal stores here have it (found it at drugstore.com). It's supposed to be good for depression, etc. I just had a complete physical, and no problems, except for the thyroid, which seems to be an ongoing problem with many women after menopause. Great to hear what other people are using, the MD's don't know everything!

We use a product on our farm called EM-1 (Effective Microorganisms). Since our farm had been abused with herbicides, pesticides and poor management for years, we are just trying to replenish those beneficial bacteria back in our soil. It has sure enhanced our transition to organic-chemical free. They just recently issued a human version ProEM1, seems it does the same thing for your gut that EM-1 does for the soil
