My Pop is a Master Gardener and his hands are always chapped from tending his soil. He asked me what could he use to smooth his hands and when I told him to use Bag Balm he looked at me strange and said; "I thought that was for cow udders?" I said; "Yes and it has other uses as well." He loves the stuff now.

I know a lot of people like bag balm, and my grandmother used it too. I choose not to use it because it is a petroleum and lanolin based product and I avoid both of those ingredients if possible.

One thing I like to use instead that works extremely well is this recipe. Ive replaced the lanolin and petroleum with natural waxes and oils from non-animal sources (obviously other than the beeswax)and the tea tree oil is replacing that sulfur ingredient that I cant pronouce as an antiseptic agent.

1 1/2 oz Beeswax

4 oz Olive oil (infuse with herbs if desired for fragrance)

1 TBSP Cocoa butter if you have it our leave it out.

10-30 Drops Vitamin E oil (comes in capsules at pharmacy)

3 tbsp tea tree oil

Melt your beeswax and olive/herb oil in the upper portion of a double boiler over low heat.

Remove from heat, carefully dry the water off the bottom.

Add the tea tree oil and vitamin E, blend

I dont intend to offend, I just wanted to share an alternative if anyone else is opposed to these ingredients and didnt know.

Pour into container of choice and allow to fully cool before capping. Its like an ointment. I usually use a wide mouth canning jar.

I keep a tub of bag balm in my studio. When the tools leave me with a callous I rub it on and it gets better quickly.

It's also great for under eye circles! :)

Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world.

Bag Balm is the BEST!!! I use it in the winter when I get cracks around my fingernails . . under a bandaid. I use it in the summer when (I'm the "barefoot farmgirl") I get cracks in my heels with outside work or wearing sandals. My feet HATE shoes and my feet HATE being hot!!!!
I find that Bag Balm heals things far better than anything else out there!!!!
My dad always had a can of it in the barn . . .yes, he used it on cow udders. But he used it on hands, etc. Great stuff!!!

Corn Huskers Lotion is another thing to have onhand for chapped and broken skin and my girlfriend in Iowa says it even works as a lubricant for sex - lol - I thought that was funny but I guess there is nothing harmful in Corn Huskers Lotion, and by the time you hit menopause, you are about willing to try anything

Have also used this in the deep throws of winter.

Have also used Hoof Flex. If you have horses, you should know about this too.

For those who don't,it's a hoof conditioner that prevents hoof cracking and brittleness. You paste it on using your hand or a brush. You can find it at most feed and tack stores.

It makes human hands really soft due to the lanolin, and makes your nails grow like crazy.

Bag Balm is like vinegar or baking soda in having many uses. When on the porch repotting plants, the porch swing ceiling hook would not quit squawking from everyone's use. I added a bit of bag balm intended for garden roughened hands to the fixtures. No more squeaks. Back to blissful gardening.

Hey Marly! I have seen Bag Balm at Wally World before. It is a green that says "Bag Balm."

I think Bag Balm has always been very popular in New England, and it sure does a good job on gardeners' hands. I always have a can around.

Marly...
Bag Blam comes in a green square tin. It's pretty big, the bottom would fit in the palm of your hand. You can also find it in reall small square tins too...
Here is a link to their website so you can see what it looks like...

Or it looks like you can order direct from them.

Bag balm is GREAT for chaffed skin...it's the best diaper rash cream ever. I would like to suggest that goatsmilk lotion is another great product for healing work weary hands. I have access to someone who makes the stuff from their own nubian goats and I haven't had a chapped hand since I started using it. It has something in it that your hands needs. No more rough skin, no dry cuticles---it's a miracle I tell ya! Plus, your skin drinks it up the stuff so your hands aren't greasy. Here's there website (and I have no affiliation with this family, just love their stuff! www.sistersfive.shoppingcartsplus.com

Melanie:
About this Bag Balm. I went today to the Tractor Supply store. This fellow that works there had never heard of the stuff. He brought out a tube called Moocow cream for the hands. Can you tell me what exactly it says on the product, so I can look for it. My hands are just horrible, I have small cuts on the sides of my nails. Too much yard, garden, work, I guess. Where is the best place to buy it? Thanks for the information.

I find it smells a wee bit like mint...spearmint maybe? anyway...we use it on our cows udders. Also, I use it on my feet, hands, hemmrhoids (the odd time I get them). I have also used it on a cold sore. there is a popular country singer Shania Twain that uses it as a face cream...and she has beautiful skin!!

I put it on my feet. Cover with sock and plastic and go to bed. Next morning I have the softest feet in the world.
ranchmama Posted - Jul 30 2008 : 07:49:40 AM
I used it all the time when the kids were in diapers. It was much nicer to use then other diaper creams. Always worked too. I've used it on my dry sore feet too, right before bed with socks. Have even used it as chap stick once or twice.
It doesn't really have a smell, it just smells like balm, if that makes sence!

Once, I had just gotten a new tin and my 2 oldest got up on the changing table and into the tin. They had it smeared all over them selves, the changing table, the window, the wall... Oh my it was hard to get out of the clothes!

I use Bal Balm on my hands daily. In the winter when I have to be outside in the cold and wind, I also use it on my face when it gets terribly dry. And I have very sensitive skin. It works just great.

In the winter my hands get so dry and around my fingernails the skin splits. I'm going to get some of that Bag Balm and have it ready for my hands this winter. Where does one get this? Thanks for the great suggestion.

We use it on diaper rash on my youngest grandchild. Heals it up nicely and very fast.

My father is a dermatologist and he often recommended Bag Balm for very dry skin, rather than an expensive prescription.
