Today it was SO hot, and SO sunny, and I still had work to do in the field and gardens...AND...I have an almost 4-year-old and a 9-month-old who need to go with me. The bigger guy can work right along with me, so I put the little one in his carriage and then thought that in addition to the canopy, which wasn't providing enough shade for his fat little legs, that I needed a blanket or something to keep the sun off. Well, it was just SO hot, I couldn't bear the thought of a blanket, so I used a fresh, crisply line-dried cotton flour-sack dishtowel, and it was PERFECT! Lightweight, just the right size, good coverage...

XOXO, Libbie

What a great idea...an embroidered one!!! For a little boy it could have sailboats or little tractors...hmmmmm.... I will have to get on that idea!! Good thought Michelle!!

Oh, what does MaryJane call the little towelette in her book that she drapes around her neck...like a shilly shally! Yes, a baby shilly shally... Now that would be a cute project to make. A simple little light cloth that can be wet down and used to provide shade to outdoor/sunny babies, wet foreheads, faces, hands, feet. Instant environmentally friendly air conditioning and cute! I used to use a sarong to make canopies for my daughter when she was an infant. She loved the patterns and colors, I got such a kick out of seeing her try to catch it in the breeze over her head... precious babies.... When we were done outside, I could tie it up and use it as a purse/sling to pack in our things.

Not quite as romantic, but there are little umbrellas that clamp to the side of your baby carriage or carrier, etc. Those are nice as anything large and black not only provides shade, but the breeze stirs a bit more underneath it. I guess a beach umbrella would be wonderful to and you could move it around as needed.

Michelle- when my daughter was tiny and I needed to work out doors I sort of tented her carseat. I had this fabric that was sort of between cheesecloth and a thread bare sheet. Not sure where it came from, somebody else's junk I collected probably. Not fully transparent but pretty much so. I would get it wet with the hose and wring it out and drape it over the canopy and around the car seat. It provided a little shade and kept her cooler. I rewetted it pretty often. I think it worked pretty well.

I actually think that Arthur would look darling in a long muslin "jumper" over his onesie, and muslin a bonnet to go with it - maybe he'll signal a renaissance of sensible baby clothing!!! Actually, Michelle, it's a great idea, and I just might do it as he LOVES to be outside in his carriage - Thanks!

Back when babies wore bonnets and dresses regardless of gender, they were more protected than now from the sun. But just try that now... I'm glad the light cloth helped.

Perfect idea!! I remember using a cloth diaper (I had the big flat birdseye weave type) that same way when I had tiny ones and lived in Minnesota.
It WAS hot today here in Utah!!!
