I just thought I would share this recipe. They are easy to make and last a long time.

1 oz beeswax (Yellow or white will work)
2 ozs butters (any combo that makes 2 oz Cocoabutter, shea, mango, or any oil that is solid at room temp... my favorite is Kokum Butter)
2 ozs liquid oils(any combo that makes 2 oz olive, almond, apricot, jojoba, sunflower, canola... oils that are liquid at room temp )

Melt until just melted together and pour in molds. Almost anything will work as a mold. Flexible plastic works best... yogurt containers, fruit cup containers, candy molds. Stick them in the freezer for an hour... and they will pop out cleanly.
Or just pour into tins or little jam jars with lids and use like a balm or you can buy twist up big lotion tubes... Be creative

Scented bars... essential oils work great, or you can infuse herbs in the liquid oils before you make your bars.

Massage bars? Add dried beans

I always add some vit E so the oils wont go rancid quickly... but you cant save bad oils.

Less Greasy... add 1/4 cup of cornstarch... add more if you want until it gets to where you like the feel.

Any question?.... Just ask

What a great idea! Would coconut oil work? It's solid at room temp.

Elizabeth,
What is the natural scent of Kokum? Is it mild or strong? I have "issues" with smells, and I'm always cautious...
Also, MountainRoseHerbs.com is a good source of butters, herbs, oils and waxes.
thanks,
Kelly

I'm still waiting for my plastic push up tubes. UPS tried to deliver them 3 times while I was at work and now I think I have to go to their warehouse to pick them up :(

I did a google search and found 1 oz. push up plastic tubes for about .97 each. I ordered 30 because this is definitely going to be a farmgrrrl chapter project :)

Liquid oils... add herbs and let it sit for 3 days - 2 weeks or you can warm the oils on the stove not to hot and simmer it in. I have done it with dried Chamomile, which is nice. A soaper friend in WA said that infusing oils with fresh chamomile is divine. So this summer I will be growing fresh just to infuse. Mint & Lemon balm would be a nice fresh como. I would just stay away from spicy stuff, since it may be to irritating.

How do you infuse the herbs in the oils?

Sherri -- try Brambleberry.com. Since you're so close the shipping won't be bad. And their products are great!

Thank you for sharing this recipe! I can't wait to try it with the girls in our Do It Yerself! Farmgrrrl Chapter. We're making lists of potential projects and this will be up at the top. They'll love it! I have a couple of the tube style stick moisturizers and I love, love, love them. One is orange spice and the other is rosemary.

Sherri, I would try looking for the butters and oils at a health food store or even a beauty supply store.

Where would you get those kind of supplies? My town is small but in a city the size of Olympia you'd think there would be someplace that would sell them. Beeswax I can find, but butters and liquid oils other than cooking oil or car oil LOL escape me. Thanks

Scenting rule of thumb.... for leave on products no more than 5% total wt... Vit E addition rate is 0.01% to neat (100% you can pour it on your skin), For this recipe, if you have capsules... one or 2 is good. This stuff is sticky and smells pretty foul, IMHO.

The more you add the better it will be for healing and fading scars.... If you add at 0.5% to 1%, you wont be able to smell it through what ever you scent it with and it will keep away the rancidity.

What is nice and surprisingly strong scented is if you infuse you liquid oils in fresh chamomile flowers. If you want it to be extra healing, great on scars is Emu Oil.... if you dont care about the meaty thing, give it a try.

Mikki -- for that size recipe I would recommend about 12 drops of Vitamin E and up to 1/2 tsp of essential oil. This will depend on the strength of the essential oil you're using to scent with. Something like peppermint you would use less of -- just judge by how stong you want the scent to be.
