Have a question - How many of you have actually chopped an entire cord of wood? Do you use an axe or a wood splitter? What type of wood did you chop? I do know that some wood is easier to chop than others. I have hard oak here.

I use a splitting maul too, when the wood splits easy. You get some narly elm, and then I borrow my dads splitter. I think using the maul is sometimes quicker then the splitter. When the wood pops with one hit, it makes me happy! I do most of the wood cutting here too. My husband was laid up this fall, so me and his cousin did all our wood. I don't care much for laying out the trees, but have done it with success!

I used to split 10 full cords of wood a year, I used a splitting maul and axe. All was done by hand. I would do 100 logs a day all year long, that way it was not too bad. Stocked up in the summer made it a lot easier. I burned mostly oak, which is a very hard wood.

you may be able to get some really DRY wood that is very SMALL in diameter and split with a splitting maul. That is what we use. The maul does most of the work, heavy tho.
I suppose for a badge you could just use and axe and some very small DRY wood.

I read the article on chopping wood in the new issue of Mary Janes magazine. The merit badge does not specify whether to do it by hand or if log splitter can be used. I don't know if ay my age I could do ALL of it by hand. :)

Wood splitter, if you don't have one you can rent one, pending you have enough wood to even bother with renting.
As far as some wood being easy to split, depends on hard or soft wood. And you should only burn hard wood for a wood stove fire anyway. Also if your wood is wet, it will be VERY hard to split.
