 I had to take a break and come inside for a quick post on my complete frustration at myself. I am trying (very badly) to build a box - a planter out of 2x6s that I'm going to be using in the garden. All the wood is cut, I have the cordless drill/screwdriver all charged, I did pilot holes in the ends for the screws - and I still stripped the screws and couldn't get the edges to meet up. Wow, it's only a four sided box! Apparently, that is beyond my skill set.
I need remedial construction classes, clearly!
Whew, I feel better now.  Too bad I never took those shop classes in high school.

Well, I finished it! Nails worked better than screws, strangely. I used the same method to make some big raised garden boxes. Whoohoo!! Let's hear it for DIY. :-)

Make sure your boards aren't warped or bent a little.That could make them not meet on the ends properly. Also, the stakes would work if you "hinged" the three panels together for each side like you were making shutters. Old flat brackets would work good for that. Two holding each of the boards together (16 altogether), they could be made with scrap metal and a drill to make the holes(2 holes on each 1 at the top 1 at the bottom). Screww or bolt them to the wood and then use stakes. Sounds hard, but it's not. I've had to do it to a few boxes I've made in the past :)

Check the box of screws. We have found that the ones we got that were made in China were not as strong. We got them at the same building supply store we had before and found they had others made in the USA that did work. Another good reason to buy American.

Kimberly Ann- good for you for taking on this project!!!! I am a do it yourself-er from way back. Not that it was ever easy.... I made a huge 12' long by 12' high shelf cupboard built-in wall unit for the dining room in our old house about 8 years ago. It ended up being very nicely done....somehow.... my son did help me a little, but he was still young at the time!
Okay, so now hopefully you are back at it, and it will work, hang in there, and don't give up, you'll get it!

It's going to be a raised box for a espalier cherry tree that I can't dig down for planting. Unfortunately, I have to stack three rows of boards to get the roots of the tree completely submerged so I don't think the wooden stake method would work - darn it! But I will do that for my chicken garden that I am planning. Thanks!

Is this going to be like a raised bed? I don't screw my wood together. I just use pieces of rebar or wooden stakes along the outsides of the box. That holds the sides up great. Just a thought.

Is your wood pressure treated? I believe you need special screws for that kind of wood?...good luck, I am still building on my toolbox!

It may be your drill that is not up to the task. It might just be too weak or you may need to turn up the torque a bit. Just a thought. Good for you using power tools!!!
