I wasn't too sure where to post this question. I was thinking about making, well I call them buddies but I am not sure what their name is. You make a long rectangular out of fabric and fill it with rice and then you can microwave it and put it around your neck. Well I wanted to make some as bed warmers to keep my toes warm at night. What I was wondering was about essential oils, I don't know anything about them but if I put a few drops on the rice would it smell real good each time I heat it up and would the oil leave a mark on the fabric? If anyone knows anything about essential oils it would be real helpful. Thanks

I love these bags, however, don't be surprised if one day you have little "flies" flying around. It seems that if you buy your rice in a "whole foods" type store where minimum processing is the name of the game-the larva aren't killed! I learned the hard way to put the rice on a baking sheet and heat it to 400 degrees for a half hour, stirring it every 5-10 minutes is the only way to reduce the chance of "flying friends" invading your home. Notice I said reduce!
Have a wonderful day!

If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping!

I bet if you put essential oil onto the rice- in sparing amounts it would be fine. If it is really a concern you could make a second cloth tube to go around your buddy. That way the oil would probably be stopped before it got through multiple layers of cloth. A duvet cover for your Bed Buddy!

BTW Ladies- make sure you alway use microwave safe fabric. I had a friend make me one once as a Christmas present, but she used a cotton blend fabric and the synthetic scorched badly in the microwave and smelled horrible.

Thanks Diane -- I'm going to get some flax seed and make one for my neck.

I have used a flax seed buddy that I made for over 2 years now in the microwave. It has been just fine, and I love the toasty nutty smell that comes out too! It seems to stay warmer longer than the rice, I think because it is a denser seed.

I think I'm going to try the flax seed one and see if it heats well. I would think that any kind of seed, since you are actually heating the moisture within the seed, would work. I had a flax one sewn in silk with lavender and mint for a cool pack for over my eyes and it was wonderful.

I never heat the ones with flax seed..never knew if it was okay..so I use those for the cool ones...I would love an answer to that question too...I just assumed it wouldn't work.

Hey There-
I use essential oils in my eye pillows mixed with flax seed and herbs and so long as I mix them up first in a bag with the rice or flax in it is fine- no stains. It is also nice to make the buddy out of muslin and then make a washable cover so it can be cleaned- if a drop or two gets on the inner part there is no problem. I actually put a zipper in a few inner's so I could put fresh filling in once a year - this set was madeout of silk so I wanted to reuse it- that worked well though it is more labor intensive.
Hugs, Rebekka

Can you use the flax for the ones you heat in the microwave? When I've made the rice ones I just mixed my essential oils and herbs in with the rice before filling the bag. That works great. But the rice is so heavy and I think the flax might work better.

I have used dried lavender and chamomile and it works great. I mixed it in with the rice...smells heavenly over and over each time it is heated. For the cool ones I use flax seed the same way...they feel great over your eyes!

Thanks Blueroses, I think I might just try dried herbs, I worry that the oils would ruin the fabric. Thanks

Rose:

The following was posted by CathyM on Nov 13. She used herbs, not EO. Debbie

"I have had a backache for 4 days now. a few weeks ago a customer came into the fabric store and asked me if I knew what a "bed buddy" was, well no i didn't so she went on to explain what it was and how to make one. I used her idea tonight and my backache has subsided.

Bed Buddy

Fabric: a fat quarter (18" x 21") or size of your choice.
rice
Optional: dried lavender or herb of your choice

Stitch fabric wrong sides together in a rectangle, leaving a 3" opening for turning. I double stitched the seams. Turn in side right. Fill with half way with rice and a small amount of lavender. Sew opening closed.

Heat in microwave for 2 minutes and enjoy the heat. It lasts for approximately an hour. You can also put smaller ones in the freezer for a bit to chill them and use for migraines or to reduce swelling."

**Go up to "Search" on the top right of the screen and you can search for other info on Bed Buddies.
