I used the last of my Cascade and have been using my own powder detyergent for a week! I can't claim the recipe as my own, but it's here if anyone is interested.

I am going to tweak the recipe a bit more to my own tastes but it's a step! I am also making my own soap and bath salts now too and I just love it!

Does anyone have a recipe for laundry detergent that they can share?

There is a whole thread in "Cleaning up" on how to make homemade Laundry detergent, but to make the powder, the basic recipe is:

Equal parts of:
Just about any Soap (Fels Naptha, Castille, Homemade or Boraxo powdered Handsoap)
Washing Soda
Baking Soda
and
Borax.

Mix well and use about 2 tablespoons to a quarter cup depending on load size and dirt level. Grate the soap as finely as you can, and if you have problems with it dissolving in your water, just dissolve it in a cup of hot water before adding to wash.

****Note- Borax turns into Hydrogen Peroxide at medium/high temperatures so washing colored and dark clothes in cold water is a good idea and whites in hot if they need some whitening.

I will have to try this one. The other recipe I have did not work so well. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I found citric acid at our natural foods co-op in the bulk section. It's also good for making fizzy bath salts.

Cheryl, look in the candle making section of craft stores. After hunting all over Lexington, I found that Hobby Lobby was the only place I could find it -- didn't try beer/wine making places. Maybe they'd have it cheaper. Hmmm.

if there is a store by you for making beer/wine you can get citric acid there!
