I was wondering if you could recommend good fire kindling. I know I have read of so many different ones and I don't know which is best? We have a wood stove and right now we are just using newspaper. Is there anything quicker and better?

Unfortunately, we can't cut down our own wood we have it delivered. I have been collecting twigs in the back yard and some pine cones from across the street. The newspaper helps,too. We saved it all summer and we are having an easier time starting the fire.

Do you cut your own fire wood? If so, while youre out cutting, cut down a cedar and then cut it into 6-8in sections. Get a hatchet and use about one section split up on top of your newspaper. cedar splits EASY(a softwood) |

No matter what you use for kindling, it has to be small and dry. I don't even have the energy to pick up my splitting mall anymore. Must get in better shape.

When I cooked on my Woodcookstove, we used anything we could get our hands on.
so consequently, I dont have any one wood, just about anything...can be used, paper, fabric, wood, wax fire starters, whatever you have...the best wood we have found for our wood cookstove is a hard wood, it burns hot and fast....Apple(of which is in abundance in the apple capital)we used a lot of, but, anything else works in a pinch, even dry cowpatties or goat berries....When one I was desperate, one uses whatever one has....LOL!!!

My neighborhood is about 30 years old. There are some people replacing their shake roofs with a composition type. We go to the neighbors house and catch their shakes and sue them for starting fires. They appreciate it as less to haul off to the dump in which they have to pay fees on, we get free fire starters. Currently we are burning the Peterson's roof. lol.

During the spring and summer months I collect all of the little twigs that have fallen into the yard throughout the winter and pile them up. By the time I need to start building fires I have quite a stash of kindling. When my pile runs out I then split up a piece of fir into kindling.

Newspaper is a great fire starter, but for kindling using thinly split pine sticks is great! The high sap ratio in Pine helps the fire catch and burn hot enough to catch larger, harder wood logs on fire.
