Hello farmgirls! I'm brand new to the site and want to say "Wow"! I am an aspiring organic farmgirl, in love with dirt and sun and growing things. And at the moment I am a housepainter, so I thought I'd offer help to anyone with questions about preping and painting rooms. I figure its something that most farmgirls would prefer to do for themselves, but some may not be sure about the details. I only check my mail once every week or so; please don't be discouraged if a reply doesn't come right away. I'm so glad this forum exists. This way of life, this vision we share...well, I think we're on to something. Have a lovely day!

How long do you REALLY need to wait between coats of the same paint. The can says four hours, do I really need to wait four hours?

Boy is that true about priming under wallpaper!! I have been a professional paper hanger for years, and had one job where the builder did not prime and OMG what a mess. The actual paper tore off the wallboard with the old wallpaper!!We had to patch and prime for days. |

Hey Laura!
Well, as far as taping goes, the actual kind of tape you use makes a difference. Generally there are three kinds of masking tape available;they vary based on tackiness- the longer you leave on high tack tape, the more likely it is to peel paint off. The stuff you imagine when you think masking tape is an off-white color and has the most tack,as the label says it should be left on for 3 days, max. The medium tack is usually royal blue and can stay on for 7 days. The lightest stuff is sometimes purple and sometimes light green and can stay on for 14 days(or so it says).Granted you really won't need the tape on for more than a day, but I find that for stripes and stuff, the blue stuff works best. You want to make sure that the surface you're painting the stripes on (your base color) is completely dry and preferably cured, meaning waiting like a week, before putting any tape on. Waiting's a bummer, I know, but it's better than having to do it over.Depending on the thickness of your stripe, you may want to use one of the thin, 5 inch rollers, as they hold less excess paint. Also, don't try to get a solid coat in one try; if you put less paint on in more coats(2 should be fine,3 max)you'll have less extra paint bleeding under the tape. And laser levels are awesome for laying the tape down straight. Have fun and don't forget- you can always paint over it! Yee-ha!
And speaking of primer- please note- Always prime a wall before wallpapering! Whether it already has paint or not, it will make it easier on whomever (hopefully not you) has to take it down. For what goes up (when its in style) will surely come down (when it's not.)

Hi Laura D! Welcome to the board. My dad was a professional painter - so I've never been afraid of paint. My husband complains that he never knows what color the living room may be when he comes home! But I know your job - it's neat to see how color can change a room!
Laura H., I've done stripes many, many times, and I notice I get leaks when using an eggshell, satin or semi-gloss for all colors. If the first layer is a flat, then I've had no leaks. I've used eggshell for the stripes and it seems to be okay.
I had one HORRIBLE incident at a client's house. The stripes came out great, no leaks, no lines, the colors were perfect - but as I pulled off the tape I found out that the builder had never used a primer on the walls! So the paint the builder had put on (my base color) came right off. It was a mess. A very sad, upsetting mess! |

What a great topic. I know I've noticed some other posts about struggling to get painting jobs done. I've painted so many rooms I feel like a pro at it, but I look forward to checking back and seeing if I can get some handy tips as there is no room in my new house that doesn't desperately need painting.
How about I get it started with masking? I want to paint some big, horizontal stripes on the walls in my kids' rooms but am intimidated by trusting masking tape. I always get leaks underneath when I use it or it pulls the paint off when I remove it.
