As I was wondering
how to do this too, I posted this question on another forum I belong too..And some knew!!! yeehaaaaaaaaa

To extract the lanolin from unwashed wool you boil the wool in water
for a few hours, adding salt to improve the yield of lanolin. Next,
you reduce the solution by boiling off most of the water. After you
filter any undissolved solid material from the hot solution and let
it cool, you should be left with a pale-yellow waxy solid floating
on the surface of the water. This is impure lanolin. You can purify it
, as we did on the show, by taking the crude lanolin and shaking it with
a mixture of olive oil and water. The impurities will dissolve into the
water and the oil, leaving you with a solid layer of off-white, waxy 'purified'
lanolin suspended between the oil and water.

Dianne,
I am not 100% sure specifically in the case of lanolin, but with other water/fat combinations, emulsification doesn't occur with heat but with continual blending at high speed ( as in making homeade mayo or salad dressings,or face cream in a blender)slowly adding oils to the whirling water or vinegar in the blender. Both waters and oils being the same temp aids emulsification.
It probably needs the high boil to extract the oil and then the cooling off (even refridgerated possibly) to solidfy it on the surface of the water.
I will be interested to see what all of your experiments yield!
I'd love to give it a try.

Hi Dianne, no I havent tried yet, but plan to do so, will let you know how it goes.

I tried to do this and it didn't work. I didn't bring it to a boil, but just below simmer so as not to emulsify the water and lanolin. It did anyway! I also read on one website that lanolin is water soluable. I'm anxious to hear if any of you has actually given this a try and succeeded better than I.
