About month ago, we were visited by a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. The bird played in our two bird baths out back for over 45 minutes. It was drinking and taking a bath. It just splashed and played in the water! Last week, we noticed three smaller birds fluttering around above the yards. They landed on the electrical pole out there. We grabbed our binoculars to check them out. . .American Kestrels! We are so excited! They have been hanging around out there for the last few days. They spend their time hunting and roosting on the pole. My Husband was out back the other day and two of them came down and landed on our garden fence not more than 20 feet away from him. they looked to see what he was doing and then flew back up to roost on their pole. They don't seem to bother the other birds too much. We did see them grab something that was moving down the palm tree in the neighbor's yard. . .probably a squirrel or a rat, as those are the only things that we have spotted on that tree. Can't wait to see how long they stay and what they do next!!!

Tara, it is a treat to see raptors so close, especially since we are in the city. Ours have successfully kept the squirrels at bay. Ours have enjoyed our birdbaths and hunting in the neighborhood.
Judith, I am so sorry that you are missing your critters! It is hard to move to town, but sometimes it is necessary. Enjoy those that you do have. We just keep putting more things in our yard for them.
They seem to be coming more and more!

Interactions with critters are something I miss by moving to town. However we still have the occasional possum and once a raccoon took all our goldfish from the little pond and left muddy paw prints across the back porch. We do have squirrels and bluejays and a mockingbird that sings on hot nights.

I was watering and a hawk landed about 5 feet away. I think she(have no idea if boy or girl) was wanting water. We both had a good stare and each other and she flew up into tree. I think she is a cooper's hawk. Anyway she has been here all summer. Sometimes she sits in the woods and I can see her. She sometimes sits by bird feeder. Just her presence has kept the rabbits and squirrels from getting in garden. I do have a small pond and I've seen her swoop down across water.
A treat to see these this raptor close up

Today's good mood brought to you by a lot of coffee!!!

That sounds so cool, Judith! My husband and I would welcome the chance to rescue if the need arose. We just love the birds that have been making our yard their home!
Krista, we love watching them fly and hunt. . .awesome creatures!

That is pretty neat Nancy. We tend to have the occasional hawk flying over the field behind us. They are fun to watch, especially when you see them catch their prey.

What fun Nancy. I once had the pleasure of rescuing and raising two kestrels.
