Posted - Dec 29 2023 : 10:19:29 AM I'm a sucker for free shipping offers so today I ordered 3 blacked eyed Susan roots to be delivered in the spring. I've never grown blacked eyed Susans before and each year I like to grow something new. Info said it was a good container plant so that makes it perfect for me. Now to find a sunny spot on my back deck for it which is hard to do with the shade taking over more and more every year.

Posted - Feb 02 2024 : 3:39:28 PM I love dianthus for containers. They come back every year for years. I have pink, white, red, purple. I just replanted some one that had been blooming in the same pot for 8 years! I have 4 concrete planters of them on my patio and some on my raised bed. I cut them back early spring and in July. They bloom until the first hard freeze. This one was under all that ice and snow. Connie |

Posted - Feb 02 2024 : 2:35:17 PM Lisa, handsome young men and cowboys are scarce these days. My bay was 5 years old when I goofed up and wintered it outside.

Posted - Feb 01 2024 : 12:39:16 PM My bay that I tried to winter over on the deck has not made it since the 9 degree temps a couple of weeks ago. It has slowly died. Bay is one of my favorite herbs, so I ordered one today in a 2-gal pot. Should be here next week and it will definitely be an indoor bay. Guess I am back to trucking it outside in the spring and inside in the winter.
To justify the expense, I am giving myself an early birthday gift. Happy Birthday to me! lol

Posted - Jan 30 2024 : 10:56:17 PM Lisa, that's one of the problems in mulch you never know where it came from or what's in it.
This will be the first time I have grown black eyed Susans so I am looking forward to seeing how they do on my back deck.

Posted - Jan 30 2024 : 6:31:06 PM I'm so glad to hear I am not the only one! Our weather has been so rainy and dreary, its nice to have the tree lights at night. I may take it down this weekend, BUT,maybe not. LOL Sara, I need to get some more black eyed Susans. I had some for several years, but a few years ago I utilized some mulch that for whatever reason, killed them and my echinacea

Posted - Jan 30 2024 : 4:03:03 PM Lisa, my sister still has her Christmas tree up because she can't part with it either. She told me that there have been plenty of Marches where she finally took down her tree!! So you aren't alone in enjoying your Christmas tree well past New Years Day.
Sara, you will have to let us know how your Black-eyed Susans do this year. I love those flowers too!

Posted - Jan 29 2024 : 08:11:04 AM You guys are so far ahead of me! I still have my Christmas tree up! We got a small cut tree from my friend Tammy, who has a local greenhouse. She got the trees about a week before Thanksgiving, and the tree still has flexible limbs and is not dropping any needles. Crazy! I just can't bear to take it down, but I need to, as that is the spot that I do my seed starting. I want to try more flowers this year. I always get the seeds but plant to late or have no luck. I love Iris, but don't have any. |

Posted - Jan 29 2024 : 07:46:25 AM Saw on-line this morning that onions are a good companion plant for carrots, both deter pests. Onions are also good companions to roses.

Posted - Jan 28 2024 : 09:34:09 AM Michele, I'm going to try carrots again this year. My granddaughter and I had a small raised bed that we do together. Carrots would be easy to plant. I miss gardening on a larger scale.but still enjoy raised bed and patio pots. Connie |

Posted - Jan 28 2024 : 04:09:37 AM Good luck with all the seed starting. I won't be starting till March. I did pick up some seeds at the store and need to go through my seed box and see what else I might need. My memory is sometimes wrong, lol. Carrots is on the top of my list this year. I have had a couple bad years growing them, and I need to get some in the pantry.

Posted - Jan 27 2024 : 06:54:07 AM Shennandoah, healthy looking seedling, hope they all do as good.
I have irises I got from my grandmother's home in 1973 when the home place was sold. The irises had naturized through the years and her backyard was solid irises. I dug up six and they were all deep purple. I remember her purple irises from the 1940's.
Yesterday I received my seeds from Eden Bros Nursery. 2 zinnias; white yarrow (medicinable herb); and ruby Swiss chard. All will be sowed directly into raised galvanized tubs when it's time.
On-line I found this seed germinating solution. May give it a try.
Mix 1 tsp white vinegar with 1 cup water (doesn't specify distilled water but I will use it because of the chorine in Paris water)
Soak seeds for 6-12 hours - no more - soaking longer may damage the seeds.
