I'm trying for the second year to start flowers in seedling trays. I tried it last year and the seedlings started out well and then just sort of died on me. They sort of wilted. I'm trying again this year and my purple cone flower seedlings look as if they are doing the same. They are kept in potting soil. Watered everytime the surface looks to be drying. I keep them in the sun on the portch during the day and bring them inside if it gets cool or looks like rain. It seems I can only get my seedlings so far (about an inch to an inch and a half depending on the type of flower) before they croke. Any tips on caring for seedlings? Should I let them dry out more before watering?

I pour water into the bottom of the trays so the soil will soak it up from the bottom. As far as air circulation goes, I suppose they have plenty up top, but they are in those plastic seedling trays so not much air flow in the bottom. Should I take the cells out of the trays?

Try watering from the bottom and make sure there's good air circulation. It sounds like damping off. You can poke your finger down into the soil, being careful of roots, to check the moisture below the surface.
