I grew eggplant for the first time last year. I transplanted plants from on-line nursery. They grew but not one made. I knew others in different areas of northeast TX who planted eggplants and they all failed. We all decided it was not a good year for eggplants.

Following info from Neil Sperry's Complete Guide to Texas Gardening 1982:

Eggplant grows best once the soil is warm. Loose garden soil containing a good portion of organic matter is best, as is a sunny location. Fertilize eggplant monthly with a high-phosphate garden fertilizer. Keep the plants well watered to prevent off-flavored fruit.

I just put okra in - a first for me. All I know is that they like warm weather.
