Posted - Mar 17 2007 : 07:54:43 AM Diane, Chris did a beautiful job! They're amazing. I also thought the mold meant the end of the gourds; it's so good to know how to do this. Thanks for sharing!

Posted - Mar 16 2007 : 1:05:15 PM Daisy,
Those are fabulous. I just love the bowl with the Japanese characters. Did she grow them herself? We have a Gourd Society in my county and at the fair last year they were giving away seeds. We went back a few times so now I have about 30 seeds. I haven't planted the yet and just wondered how much space they take and if they are easy to grow. I think they're great for decoration. |

Posted - Mar 16 2007 : 07:34:48 AM Good idea Diane. I have grown them before but after they started getting moldy I gave up. Thanks for the tips maybe I'll keep trying. Marybeth

Posted - Mar 15 2007 : 10:51:59 PM Thanks gals for your such nice comments. She was so pleased to receive compliments from you all.
Marybeth - we grow them in a small greenhouse, although I have grown them outside with success so you should be able to, too. They don't dry on the vines and most don't reach complete maturity. Chris picks them (even the little immature ones) in the late fall and brings them inside to a warm and dry place. Some/most will mold unbelievably, but as long as they don't get squishy and soft, they're okay...(I had to see this to believe it!) When they sound hollow and the seeds rattle inside, she dons a mask and scrubs off the mold. Sometimes she'll give them a wipe down with a little bit of diluted bleach just to make sure the mold is all gone. Then she just lets them dry from the scrubbing. Michelle - that is just some inexpensive bamboo spears that she bought in the craft section of Walmart! Janice & Shelle - I keep asking her if she is going to sell them at our farmer's market, but she hasn't done very many yet, so still wants to keep the ones she's done...lol. Hopefully she will get lots this year and maybe do that. Tina why don't you post pics of some your daughter has done too? Maybe they could share ideas. Does your daughter sell hers?
