Yesterday before the rains came, it was warm & sunny. I was out in the yard for a long time walking around & planning my garden for this year. I have a small yard but it's laid out well and I decided to plant the whole thing!! I'll have a small pathway to my shed & still have the cottage cutting garden but this time, this year every inch will planted w/ veggies & fruits also. I split it up into 1/4's & each space will grow it's own thing. Also my rose bushes will be in & they go out front. I don't have a tiller so I may rent one or I'll be very busy turning it over w/ my pitchfork. I am so exceited, a whole yard (little as it is) w/ crops!!

can't wait to start tilling & turning over the earth. Love the smells, sweat & bugs. Love it all.

I'm so anxious to start a garden this year because it will be my first in the new house. The previous owner didn't have any gardens so this will all be from scratch. I've been pouring over seed catalogs, but all I can see out of my window for now is lots and lots of snow. Actually right now I have a "garden plot" marked off in my living room with duct tape on the carpeting! Jim came over the other day and the first thing he said was "what's this?". I just told him "it's my garden". I think he's starting to get used to stuff like this. At least it helps me visualize the size. No weeding in this garden, just vacuuming!

Thanks Patti, yes, I'd be interested.

I have the square foot gardening book..I say it is a "must read" the concept is so easy..and hey..for a weed free garden and a more time saving method it is a great idea.

But me..I'll probably use that method once my seeds start sprouting more..plus I intend to get a hydroponics set up ..I'm wanting to grow some specialty items ..maybe for area chefs around here.

Meggie--
Our good friend is an organic gardener and teaches classes at the university on the square foot method. He SWEARS by Square Foot Gardening. I personally haven't attempted it yet, but maybe I will now.

I've been planning, too, but our weather just isn't cooperating at all. Snow expected tomorrow and torrential rains last night (which are great for pulling weeds and seedlings, if I didn't have this pesky day job!!!!)

Did get my seeds yesterday from Bakers Creek and I am SOOOO excited. Such cabin fever!

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.

A couple days ago when spring peeked through (before it snowed!?!) I was bustling around in my front garden, weeding, clearing debris, cooing over my purple crocuses. I even changed the wreath on the front door.

I recently got the book Square Foot Gardening from the library and I think I'm going to try it this year. Just a 4x4 plot. It sounds like a really easy way to raise flowers and salad crops for summer. Any one try it?

Michele,
You might be interested in reading some books I've been hearing about. My library didn't have them so I "ordered" them through interlibrary loan (a godsend!). I don't have my list here, but if you're interested, let me know and when I find it I'll send it to you.

Anyway, the books are on permaculture. I'm very new to the concept so I'm the last person who should be explaining what it is. You might want to do an internet search to find out more. It's about utilizing whatever you have to create a self-sustaining, producing environment. Just thought I'd share.

I am also planning my garden. We moved into our first house three weeks ago (we've lived in apartments since we've been together) and I'm planning herbs and veggies for the garden. I may have a container garden this year and figure out where I actually want to plant things next year. Isn't planning fun??

Michelle,

Isn't it fun to see new possibilities with what you already have in front of you? Your garden sounds as though it will be wonderful. Happy planning and planting! Ann
