Would you all mind sharing the names of some of your unusual seeds? I'm going to be planting Purple Carrots this year, called Purple Haze, and I'm looking for blue (some might call them purple) Potato. (sp?) Anyone help me here? Can you tell me about any other seeds that you have found and have fun with? I also found some radishes that are white on the outside, and HOT PINK inside, and some burgandy bush beans. Most of these loose their unusual color after being cooked, but I plan to use them most raw. Another seed I had to hunt down was patty pan seed. But I found that finally, on line. So! Spill the seeds!

I was saying today that I hadn't bough any beets! Thanks! I want to try those! Nothing "beets" a fresh beet! LOL I'm assuming that Seed Savers might have these?

No one has mentioned the beets that have a spiral red and white center...when you slice them it is rings of color..really cool. I grew them last year and they were fun and tasty too ( I LOVE beets!) I wish I could remember the name of them!

Zehphyr Squash Half yellow half green (summer squash). Red noodle yard long beans (Yes they grow a yard long &they come in green too) The red noodle beans stay red/purple when cooked
Trompochino squash Green squash the grows a yard long it has a long neck and the a bulb end. Purple & yellow snap beans.

Wow Karen! Thanks for the link! Those look too cool! I might have to try my hand at some... I've bought all my tomatoes for this year, but if you try to save your seed on those currants, would you think of selling me a packet? The seller mentioned that they self seed very easy...

I wasn't going to do Cauliflower this year, but I think the orange sounds so neat! I'm really going to have to go to seed savers. I'm really into an unusual garden. I think my kids get more invested in it when they can take their friends out and show them the wierd things that are out there! I'm an unusual and eclectic person myself, so finding things to grow that aren't "normal" makes me smile...

Oh you just have to try the "Cheddar" cauliflower. It doesn't get all funky when the sun hits it and it has a fabulous flavor. I sold out of it as fast as I could grow it last year...the same with the purple haze carrots. And you will never ever taste a new potato that tastes as good as those purple ones. Wow! I sure hope I can find the seed potatoes for them this year.
Mostly my customers want the same old standbys...beets, broccoli, beans, etc...but these were hits last year. I could have sold truckloads of them.
I am planting a different (to me) squash this year called "Festival". It is shaped like an acorn, but has marvelous coloring in orange/green/white and tastes just like a delicata. We tried a couple last fall and they're to die for.
Today I'm cleaning out the plant room...can't wait to get started again!

A couple blue pototatoes are the All-Blue and Peruvian Purple. All-Blue is my favorite because it stays bright blue when cooked, and makes an interesting bowl of mashed potatoes. I've seen orange and purple cauliflower, and of course tomatoes come in a billion colors-- besides the usual red, yellow and green you can also get peach, white, pink, and black. Then there is a red kale (I think it's called Siberian red?), rainbow chard, blue sweet corn (which also happens to be dwarf and can be grown in containers-- it's called Blue Jade/Blue Baby)... there are endless unusual varieties out there, and most of them are heirlooms. Seed Savers Exchange (www.seedsavers.org) carries everything I've just mentioned.
