I was wondering if anyone has some ideas/hints/tricks,home remedies that work for starting seeds indoors,and keeping them alive?
I'm growing from seed the following
wisteria,hollyhocks,delphiniums,larkspur,lavender,salvia,antirrinum,
thymus,sweet pea,impatiens,foxglove.
So far,I started the wisteria,and that has popped up already,but you have to keep that indoors for 1 year before transplanting.Has anyone dealt with wisteria here? any info would help.

Thanks for the nice words you guys! I need to make another set of cups and get my first set planeted! Over here on the coast, I can plant and set the tray out in the day. It's warm enough. I don't have the money for florescent lighting. I do know that you can buy them at the hardware type stores.

I recycle plastic clam shells...like what donuts come in, and salad sometimes to use as lil mini greenhouses. Where do you get the florecent lights? Like just regular ones from a home store? I thought about doing something like that in my basement. Give the spiders some company...ick!!!! I've also been saving newspapers since last fall to make pots out of. Can't wait till planting time!

Many thanks for the seed starting cup info.This will save me some $$$ I already spent atleast 40.00 on trays. Your site is really informative and fun too!Anyone reading should check it out.

I have put an instructional on my gardening blog about how I make my own degradable seed starting cups using newspaper. They work in the same way that peat cups work. You don't have to transplat your seedlings. You just put the cup straight into the ground!

I have been growing flowers from seed for years in my basement. I hung florescent lights over their table, starting about 6" above the tray, and have the light on only during the day. Be sure to read each packet to see if the seeds need to be started in the refrigerator first. Once the seedlings have grown a few inches, I turn a oscillating fan on them to simulate wind. This helps the stems harden up before I slowly get them used to being outside. I love to show off the perennials that I started from seeds. Good luck with your seeds.

My main advice is to make sure their light source is no further than six inches above the tray until they sprout. If you don't they will be leggy and will never stand up to transplant. Also, wait for those two sets of true leaves before you try to move then to another tray. It's also better to water from the bottom, but if you can't, mist instead of directly pouring water. I have never started seeds in a greenhouse atmosphere so I don't know how the light rule applies there. I do know the soil has to be at least 70 or 72 degrees.
Hope it all works out. I just love seeing seeds sprout that I have put into dirt.

I lay my seeds on a radiator thats not real hot. It has a tray on top & it works well.

Thanks Nance,and Owwlady. I had been looking in my seed catalog at a portable greenhouse,with a heat mat for seeds,maybe i'll check that out.
I will use the tea trick too,I never woulda thought of that. |

I had used a heating pad on low to set the seed tray on. I read in a magazine to do that. It worked well, but then again they may have sprouted just as well without it. Well, that didn't help much did it?! |

Greetings, gal pal. The one tip I can give to prevent "damping off" is to water your babies with room temp water that has some chammomile tea added in. Something about the herb helps keep that dreaded fungus looking fuzz from cropping up. Gentle bottom heat is supposed to help; some people start seeds on top of water heaters and refrigerators and then get them into some sunny spot as soon as they sprout up. Happy planting! Nance |
