Just unloaded some semi decomposed horse manure to augment one of my garden plots. It is located in the edge of my hayfield. I am worried about grass growing up through it before my hubby puts it in my garden plot. I have some of the black weed barrier that I'd like to cover it with. Will that prevent the grass from growing up through or is it a waste of time as hubby thinks? Yes I should have put a tarp underneath it but didn't think of it until after the fact.

I would try black plastic, if you have it. We have used that on our gardens in the spring before we plant and the heat from the sun pretty much kills all of the weed seeds. I didn't do it this spring, and my garden is loaded with grass and every such weed. I think the fabric will be too porous, although I'm not sure. Good luck!

Depending on the grass you have whether it will help or not. If the grass puts out new roots it will probably invade the manure pile. It may help keep airborne seeds out. Hopefully the pile will heat up enough to stop the grass.
