I just came in from preparing my garden for planting my MaryJane's hardneck garlic. I can't wait to get it in the ground this year. Last year was my first go around and...Oh My Gosh! If any of you FarmGirls haven't tried your luck with garlic gardening, you simply must! The rewards are many...the little spouts peek out of the ground just when you think the cold weather will never end. So, reward number one, "hope." They form such lovely and orderly rows (well, if you planted carefully...) The second reward from garlic gardening is when the hardneck variety garlic plant forms its head on the stalks, known as garlic scapes. These were made famous by MaryJane in her Garlic Scape Pesto recipe. To die for! This is one of the most versatile, lively and delicious pestos you have ever had. Of course, the MaryJane hardneck variety of garlic just makes it more incredible. It's also kinda sentimental for me, just to have a part of MaryJane's Farm in my garden. Anyway, later in the season, the garlic itself is ready for harvest. Another reward, you remember that "patience pays off." If MaryJane's Farm still has some of her famous garlic available, you should order it. They also send detailed directions so that even the most novice gardener can enjoy a successful crop. So, no...I'm not at the mall on this Friday after Thanksgiving. I'm in the garden! How about you?

I did go grocery shopping...had to. But the rest of the day I spent doing some yard work and sewing on Christmas presents. It was a beautiful day!
...she is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls.

My husband and I have a small landscaping business. He runs the crew, which does maintenance, planting, and brick and stonework. I do the design work and specialty containers (and layout of plantings). I've just gotten into Christmas lights the last couple of years, primarily for my very best client who does a big party on the first weekend in December. I also do her containers spring, summer, and fall. I do a few other containers and some holiday decorations for 3 or 4 other clients as well, but this one is the biggie.
Will see if I can get some photos this year. I really need to do that anyway for our portfolio and website (still under construction!).

Not in the mall . . . I'm putting up Christmas lights for my best-est client! Putting little white lights on all the pyramidal boxwood, holly, and yews. And on the dwarf Alberta spruce in the big pots. Tomorrow we hang the natural cedar garland, wrapped with white lights, and I need to finish off the big pots with greens, redtwig dogwood, curly willow, big sugar pinecones, and berries, and do two more big pots at her front door. Whew! Luckily it was 60 degrees today and my college kid helped me for five hours -- sacrificing some of his precious time home, he reminds me. Ah, well. I'll just give him an extra piece of that leftover pie.
What a great day.
(Wish I had some of that garlic to plant. I'm still planning to plant bulbs, and had to remove pansies from my client's pots today so I'm going to try to plant those too yet.) |
