Why are my Roma tomatoes splitting? They still taste good, I just hate loosing part of almost every one. (I'll see if I can get a pic loaded here:)

Anybody know why?

Kathy - My first thought was in accord with Joan's. Too much water or not enough will definitely cause splitting. Usually it's due to weather, but you can curb this by making sure your tomatoes are evenly watered during dry spells. When this happens, I do just like Marly said: I just cut out the split areas, and the rest of the tomato is usually just fine.

Just a little hint, too: In years past we had a lot of blossom end rot on our tomatoes - black dented dry spots on their bottoms. Last winter, I washed, dried and saved all of our eggshells, and at planting time, I crushed them and put them in the ground under the tomato plants. This year we had absolutely no problems with blossom end rot. Definitely will use eggshells from hereon in! :)

Good luck!

Hugs -

Kathy, that's what I do also. I cut around the split area first. Our tomatoes are almost finished. I think the heat just did them in.

If the weather gets too hot, and adding too much water, they will crack

Marly-I just freeze them. Split and all. They'll make good sauce anyway.

Kathy, our tomatoes are splitting just like the ones in your picture. Not all are splitting, but most of them.

That's probably what's happening. We had a wet spring, then we'll go 7 to 10 days without any rain, then torrential rains for 1 or 2 days, then the cycle starts all over again. I try to water, but we are on well water & have to conserve. Darn Mother Nature! She never does what you want her to do.
Thanks for the info. I'll try to find ways to water more frequently.
Maybe I'll set out all my empty buckets when it rains. #128517;

Cause: Soil conditions that change from bone-dry to drenched can lead to vertical crevices or circular cracks around the stem—signs that the tomato's skin toughened and then couldn't stretch to accommodate new growth.
Cure: Keep soil evenly moist, but not soaking, for even growth. Choose crack-resistant varieties, like 'Jet Star' and 'Mountain Spring.' And pick big tomatoes slightly under ripe.
