Some of the best squash is grown that way! I've grown some of the best pumpkins next to big bushes, where they grew up and out of the way of hungry deer. Learned that trick from a master gardener. (I'm a master gardener intern this year). I always grow squash vertically in my garden, too, to save space. Helps keep squash bugs at bay, too.
Amy that pic is adorable. You should be just fine, just add a trellis like you said. I've also grown squash and cukes against a fence.

I'm trying pickling cucumbers vertically in a pot this year. I'm not very experienced but thought they are small and not too heavy so I can use trellis of some sort. I'll have to scrounge around to find something to make it out of. Hope it will work. Here's a picture of my little "farmerette", my granddaughter Lily, who helped my plant the cucumbers. She loved it!

That is how we generally grow ours too, on a trellis :) If we need to "tie" anything, we use a piece of tall grass, lol. It decomposes :) Though it took me a little time to catch on to needing to buy seeds that are not strictly "bush" growth! We do the same with cucumbers :) Oh and melons too!

I grew my squashes vertically last year on tomato cages in the community garden vegetable patch that I had. It worked perfectly. They didn't rot and seemed to ripen quicker for me. It made it easier to find the squash too. I recommend it, especially if you have limited space. Good luck with whatever you do!

We had friends out west who lived on a hillside but had a garden so lovely that it was featured in Sunset Magazine! He had placed wooden ladders around through his squashes and had trained the vines up the ladders. When the fruit began to set, he would place each one on a step of the ladder so it would be supported and grow there. Is that what you are thinking of? It sure did make the most of their hillside.
