Posted - May 19 2015 : 1:41:32 PM Ahhhhh. So nice to be planting! I've got a pot of lettuce, lavender and patio tomatoes. In the garden, I've got eggplant, kale, romaine, tomatoes, peas, beets, potatoes, squash, and cukes. In front I have blueberry bushes with blooms, pumpkin, and just picked up ruffled purple basil. Ever try that?
What's growing where you are?

The tomatoes are looking good, and we are enjoying the fresh lettuce!

Posted - Jun 08 2015 : 4:05:49 PM Hi girls!
I am so excited! I just picked broccoli & lettuce today! YES!!!!
Okay... Where to begin? I've got several different beds and planting areas with all sorts of great things: cranberries (yep!), melon, ginger, pumpkin, strawberries, garlic, lettuces, kale, beets, turnips, Italian parsley, celery, carrots, onions, cucumbers, several different kinds of peppers, red orach (Thanks to Sharon aka Calicogirl - wish me luck!), spinach, two types of potatoes, sunflowers, broccoli, two types of cabbages, four types of tomatoes, eggplants, green beans, zucchini, radishes, several different types of flowers to bring in the good bugs, rosemary, sage, thyme, basil, oregano, fennel, dill, mint, lilies (not yet flowering!), daylilies, daffodils, peonies, ice plants, lilacs, antique lilacs, roses, wisteria, hostas, rose of Sharon.... I know I'm forgetting something, but you get the idea! ;) I know it must sound like we have a HUGE garden, but we really don't. My yard is actually really small, and some sections weren't planted until just this past weekend. I am trying to grow exactly what we'll need for the winter, so there are more of some things than others. I also plan to do succession planting as I go, and plant a fall garden with more cool weather veggies when possible. SO much fun! :)
I'll tell you what: the garden had a rough start with all the hot then cold then hot weather, but in the past week, it has really taken off! Everything is comfortably nestled and thriving in old straw and those free wood chips we received last fall. I added a good bit of compost to the new beds when planting, but that was about it. I've fertilized by sprinking the remaining compost on top of the chips (when it rains it makes a nice compost tea that drizzles down to the roots), and have only sprinkled once with blood meal and bone meal. We've gotten plenty of rain (PLENTY!), so I have only watered once after fertilizing. Tonight I ran out there to sprinkle the leaves with some food grade diatomaceous earth to help get rid of some flea beetles that have been going to town, while also giving the plants another nutritional boost. When it rains (and the rain IS coming!), it turns into a liquid mineral fertilizer and the plants just go crazy! I am really excited to see everything grow! And the really cool thing is that this year we have very few weeds so far - the wood chips are doing their job! The weeds that HAVE come in have been easily pulled or raked away. Low maintenance! I am really liking this! :)
My canners and dehydrator are at the ready! Oh, summer: BRING IT ON!!!
Happy gardening, girls!

In the box are dill, licorice and a variety of edible flowers. In the back on the trellises are morning glories, peas and cardinal vine. There are seven varieties of leafy greens including chard, mustard and kale. I have broccoli, tomatillo, cucumber and zucchini. I have black cherry tomatoes, peach tomatoes and purple tomatoes. I like the strange tomatoes. In another bed on pictured, I have bee and butterfly friendly plants and flowers and more herbs. This will be a great year.

Posted - May 29 2015 : 1:08:39 PM Hi Bonnie,
A friend of mine had that plant - by accident! It was pretty cool. She got both tomatoes and potatoes! They are both in the nightshade family.
My azaleas and Rhodos were quite disappointing this year. This winter was hard on them. The lilacs are amazing though!

Posted - May 29 2015 : 1:03:39 PM We are trying a new plant called ketchup and fries. It's a cherry tomato grafted onto a potato plant. You can't use it the second year but it will be fun to see what happens this year. The azaleas are gorgeous and the miss Kim lilac is in bloom. Tons of berries-to-be on the bittersweet. That is so pretty to decorate with in the fall. When the rain stops I'll plant the veggies.

Posted - May 29 2015 : 06:26:51 AM Had 3 fennel bulbs growing in wooden container. Checked on them several days ago and they were okay. When I checked this morning the bulbs were mush. Too much rain. Some green so I let the chickens have it. Dumped the potting soil in a low place I am trying to build up. Will try again next year.

Posted - May 26 2015 : 8:01:22 PM I feel so sorry for you Texas and Oklahoma gals. My son lives in Austin. I hope none of you are experiencing the flooding. My prayers are with all of you. Our garden is just soggy. First it was too cold to plant, then too wet and I will just have to wait for a dry day.

Posted - May 26 2015 : 05:45:33 AM Sara, glad to hear you are okay, though today the news looks bad in Texas. Keep us posted.
I planted more yesterday. More tomato plants went in, and I also have some garlic chives that I got at Master Gardening class. (I'm an intern this year).
My cukes are having a hard time for some reason. Last year I had so many I didn't know what to do with them. We shall see.
Also put in two more kinds of Thyme in the herb garden yesterday.
Love to see what everyone is growing! Farmgirl Hugs, Nicole

Posted - May 26 2015 : 05:11:10 AM I love hearing what everyone is growing! We have 4 different peppers, a lot of tomatoes, I think 13 not counting the cherry tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, eggplant, a couple different kinds of beans. In the herb garden I have chives, sage, white sage, mint, purple basil, thai basil, greek oregano, lemon thyme, rosemary, cilantro, and dill. The herb garden is mine, and the veggie garden is my husbands. All of our fruit trees/bushes are too young to produce this year I believe. We just planted them last year. 2 blueberry bushes, 5 raspberry bushes, 3 apple trees, 2 almond trees, and 2 cherry trees. They all are looking good, but still need to grow.

Posted - May 26 2015 : 04:51:47 AM Today, in my garden is a couple feet of water and mud. UGH! We've had severe flooding in the Houston area. I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe, my plants will survive after the water drains off.

Posted - May 25 2015 : 9:52:19 PM Everything in my garden got planted late this year due to the weird weather. I have peas and beans coming up, 3 eggplants, 2 pepper plants that are still in pots waiting to be transplanted, I have two tomato plants in pots, have five more (three of which might not make it) waiting to be transplanted, and I have beets in the front yard and endive in a container out front. I also have a pot of basil outside that hasn't come up yet, and I planted some basil with the beets. There is some cilantro coming up from last year, and I have lettuce and spinach growing in a re-purposed firepit. I planted three kinds of basil in indoor pots last night. My blackberries are looking good so far and I bought a new hose tonight to extend my soaker hose to the backyard where most of my garden is. I have marigold seeds that need to be planted around the beds to help control bugs. Hopefully I can get them planted this week. Cindy

Posted - May 21 2015 : 10:52:50 AM Our salad garden is kale, spinach, leaf lettuce, green onions and radishes. Have already eaten a radish or two, but something else has been, as well -- ha! Then we have Swiss chard, green beans, several heirloom tomatoes, two Sungold cherry tomatoes, green peppers, a couple of different jalapenos, zukes, cukes, cantaloupes, basil, cilantro, peas and snow peas. I have lots of marigolds in between rows to help keep the bugs down, nasturtiums around the scarecrow, sweet peas, phlox, hollyhocks, purple hyacinth bean vine, sunflowers, pumpkins and corn -- oh, and some kind of burgundy bean that is edible like a field bean, but I planted it for the color (couldn't find scarlet runner beans). Whew! No wonder we are tired.

Posted - May 21 2015 : 07:21:31 AM I am with Dawn, roller coaster spring! But everything is flourishing! Pics in my blog. We have lettuce, kale, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, bell peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, radishes, chives, chamomile, dill (as well as herbs up front), beets (red and golden), peas, and green beans! Oh! A few "volunteer" squashes (I am guessing a winter squash) and a few sunflowers. Strawberries in the front. We are looking at starting some cane fruit soon! I will still add one or two zucchini, cucumber, and winter squashes. Thinking I may try growing them vertically this year.
