I want to start with a balcony garden. I am not sure where to begin. I am hoping also that my SIL will let me have space at her house since we go there twice a week to watch her dogs.

Being in South Texas, it must be pretty drought resistant. Plus I don't think SIL will water the plants at her place.

Does anyone have seeds to spare? I would love some.

Hi Amy! One of the most useful herbs that is very happy growing in pots is lemon balm. I have it growing wild all over my yard. It's so hardy I bet I could send a couple of little plants and they'd be ok. Shall we give it a try? If you want to, email me your address!

I had a Meyer Lemon in CA. I loved that tree. Very productive and the sweet lemons are delicious.

I am planning to go to the home improvement store tomorrow to start getting my stuff.

My SIL has given me permission to use space in her yard. So I am so excited.

I have chocolate mint and regular mint that I need to repot. My rosemary is doing well. I found that I still have chives at my SIL's house.

I am hoping to do tomatoes and cucumbers along with herbs at the apartment. I am not sure about the other space yet. I really want a Meyer dwarf lemon tree. I read where someone got 100 lemons off his tree last year.

Yes, definitely try some herbs. So much can be done with them. I hope you have much success with your garden.

don't forget, herbs are great container plants and would work perfect on your balcony and most are drought tolerant,, check out 'pinapple sage' it has a wonderful scent,, oh and there are scented geraniums too! and for the most part they are drought hardy plants...
plus mints,, yep I luv them all. I make a tisane using chocolate mint leaves and lavender buds.. I dry them and store them in small portions,, then using a strainer I steep my tisane (tea) for 5-7min,, I don't use sugar as I like the natural taste...
Have fun...

Great idea & good luck to you!. Since it is so dry and probably sunny by you, you would really benefit from self watering containers on the balcony. They will keep the moisture level even for you and give you a break if you can't get out to water at the end of the day. The cost for those containers can be rather pricey, but you can make your own self watering container. There are really good, clear instructions in "The Vegetable Gardener's Container Bible" book by Edward C. Smith.

I live in a townhouse and after having my community garden vegetables cleaned our twice by thieves last summer, I decided this year I will be going the container route. My Windy Pines cousin, Michele, gave me the above book for Christmas. It is full of terrific advice and instructions for container garden. Your local library will most likely have it.

I look forward to hearing how your balcony garden does. Unlike your area, I live in the woods and am hoping that enough sun will make it through to allow me to get green peppers, tomatoes, etc. Flowers have always grown beautifully out there for me and I have my fingers crossed the vegetables will do the same.

Have fun preparing your balcony & watching your seeds/plants grows. I hope you have a bountiful crop!

Hi Amy!!!!!!!! Nice to see your post. Good luck on your garden. My hubby and I are in the process of putting a garden in the back yard. We're doing the fence around the garden now. It's taking a lot of time, but it's only him and I doing it. Keep us posted.

Amy, I will look through my seeds and see what I have to share. I garden mostly on my deck in containers. One of the things I enjoyed last year was a strawberry pot with portulac. Will wait and see if it wintered over. If it didn't I will repot it with more portulac.

Have a blessed day, Sara
