Posted - Dec 23 2014 : 7:55:03 PM I've been doing some research on making a section of our property a certified wildlife habitat ever since our family got the rare opportunity (at least rare for us) to watch a mama owl feed her babies. We were all standing at the kitchen window in awestruck silence....I want more moments like that so I'm taking steps to make our place more wildlife friendly. Has anyone here gone through the process?

Posted - Mar 27 2015 : 06:14:51 AM Our yard is certified for about a decade now. It's not a hard process, but involves completing a form and paying a fee. Each spring, I put up our sign, and sometimes folks ask about it. We are in a small urban area. About 3 years ago, an active community member worked tirelessly to get 100 homes signed on. Our city received some special recognition for her work.

Posted - Jan 22 2015 : 4:45:03 PM How cool to have an opportunity to watch an owl family... the closest I have ever gotten is by watching a webcam on the internet!
I certified my parents yard when I was a teenager and then did my own yard years later. Both certifications were through the National Wildlife Federation Bayard Habitat program.
It has been a long time since I did my certification but I remember that I contacted our master gardener and county extension agencies and went to several naturalist presentations at local parks and bird watching hotspots. I also researched a lot of native plants on our local native plant society checklist as well as found some great resources at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. I also obtained information about local birds from the Audubon Society. Another useful resource that I just found recently is the Xerces Society's vertebrate and pollinator protection program for info on helping dragonflies, butterflies, bumblebees and other pollinators. I am planning to add more elements to improve this area of my yard soon.
Good luck with your certification process and have fun watching your habitat transform!
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Posted - Dec 25 2014 : 04:16:47 AM Try contacting your local extension office to get in touch with a Master Naturalist. They should be able to tell you what you need to do. Cindy

Posted - Dec 24 2014 : 06:29:59 AM Great idea.
Our property is certified as a general wildlife habitat due to the amount of vegetation and pond. I went through the National Wildlife Federation survey for our certificate.
Best wishes!
