Does anyone else have trouble getting ripe figs from your trees? Each year it seems as though I get plenty of figs on the trees but very few if any ever really get ripe enough to eat. Living in NJ we do have colder weather during winter months but it also gets pretty hot in summer. The trees are beautiful and the fruit is large just not ripe. Any suggestions? |

Our next door neighbor grows figs every year, and he was really disappointed this fall when none had ripened. I can't wait to share this with him! According to the utube video he said it only took like a week for some of them to start ripening. Glad to help, figs are goood eating! Id like to know if that works as well even tho mine ripen up on their own. |

Now that I think about it, it makes sense to try cutting the leaves off. Like I said the tree has lots of foliage and plenty of figs. Maybe with the big leaves gone the strength will go to the fruit. Thanks everyone for your help-I am excited to try. We are getting close to cold weather here in NJ so I don't know if I can save any this year but worth a try.

Kelly, I also thought that they needed a little more moisture of something in the ground. I have wood chips under them and it does help with the growth. They are beautiful but no ripe figs. Thanks for the tip though.

Rita, i just googled "riprning figs on tree" and watched a utube video on ripen in ng figs. Yoy might want to try that. Basically he said at about 30days before you expect frost, you can cut all the leaves off the tree and basically all nut rd ition goes to the figs and they should ripen up. |

Try adding wood chips on ground under the trees. That should help and as it rains the wood chips send down a nice compost tea.

Thanks for the tip Chris. They are beautiful big figs so next year I will try and paint them with olive oil if they don't ripen by the end of Sept. That will be a lot of painting but they are so good that I am willing to give it a try. Some years I get some ripe ones and some years none. Maybe I have a different variety than you-I think I have Black Turkey figs. |

I either saw it or read that toward the end of the season you can paint them with olive oil and that helps to ripen them. Im in northern IL and mine ripen fine all by themselves. One tree stays outside buried all winter and the ither is potted and goes in and out. But by far the one that stays out does best.
