Just pulled out the tomatoes and really want a different solution to the Tomato cage. What are your tomato growing solutions. I have the round towers the ones that fold up into a triangle and round ones made out of fencing wire Hate them all. or do you just let them vine on the ground/

I'm with Calico Girl, cattle panels and t-posts. They're very sturdy, can take the weight of a large plant, and at end of summer they stack against my garden shed, out of the way. I've tried everything else, they work the best. Also, when an errant pumpkin vine finds it's way there, the panel can hold the weight of a very large pumpkin.

I use cement reinforcement wire. It is6x6 inch welded wire and its 5 ft tall. I cut 10 - 6 inch segment long and make it into a circle. I put them over the small plants and stake them with broken t posts or pipes. As they grow I keep the vines/ branches/suckers inside the cage. I get great tomatoes and they are never on the ground and easy to get my hand on for picking. |

I hate those also. I have a garden with a fence. I run some on the fence and some on a substantial trellis that I can move in and out of the garden. I use for cucumbers also.

All great ideas the one thing I do like is I plant and put the tower over the small plants and never do any thing else except pick them when they are ready.

I use 2 x 4 welded wire for my tomato cages. And the wire is 4 ft tall. I cut some of the wire to reach my hands in to get the tomatoes lower down. Be sure to cut in the middle of the wire rectangles and bend the cut ends up and down. Keeps from scratching your hands that way. Even with the 4 ft tall cages, my tomatoes grow up and over.

This year I tried bush varieties of early girl and romas. They did "bush" more than the usual plant shape. I am a little unhappy about having some of the fruit actually on the ground, but I can't say that it has affected the way it ripens...

I have given up on tomato cages. We use cattle panels and t-posts. I just tie the vine to the fence as it grows up. Much easier :)

I use heavy duty fishing line, strung between wooden poles that are 4 ft above ground, with 3 lines across, plants are planted centered betwenn poles and right up against line, weave the plants thru as they grown, simple, inexpensive and will last a few years...

I like the plastic poles that have a long piece to clamp them together in a square or triangle. I think I bought them at Home Depot. Since the pieces come apart they are easy to store and assemble. They don't bend like the wire ones do, nor do they tangle. I think they may be are called trellis supports. Good luck finding what works best for you.
