For years, I have bought pumpkins. They are very popular for decorating here in New England, some even through Christmas if they don't rot first. Never have had luck in growing them, and they are pricey at the stores and farms. Well...this year I have a bumper crop of orange and white pumpkins. Yippee!

I also buy cornstalks to use to decorate my mailbox post. Not this year. Grew 'em myself.

All from seed, might I add. I'm a happy farmgirl.

I too grew beautiful sugar pumpkins (baker creek seeds) this fall. processed them and made some nice pumpkin butter.

Nini I had pumpkins like your green ones last year and mine stayed green. They were called cinderella pumpkins and I have some this year that are the same shape but they are a creme color. These are called... I think... cheese pumpkins. So if yours don't turn orange you know you have the magical cinderella pumpkins. These are good to roast and cook with. They are super delicious.

Such a wonderful time of year, isn't it? Thank you so much for sharing the excitement with me! You make me smile - I just love you! Hugs - Nini

Nice looking pumpkins peeps! We've never had much luck on pumpkins, but we tried a new spot in the yard this year and at last count we were up to 35 or 36. Making a lot of pumpkin pie mash for the freezer. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins..... oh the delights!

Ooooooh! Such BEAUTIES, Nicole! LOVE them!!! The white pumpkin is so cool! I would love to try to grow them one year - what kind are they? I bet they really do look gorgeous decorated for Christmas! LOVE that idea!!! :)

My "Cinderella" pumpkins are actually Musquee de Provence... We just call them Cinderella pumpkins because they remind me so much of her carriage. Our little "foster granddaughter" is going to be Cinderella for Halloween this year. You should've SEEN how wide her eyes became when we told her we were growing these babies! So sweet! She asked if we could make her a carriage, too! LOL! Children are so precious!

Did you happen to see Sharon's (Calicogirl's) pumpkins over on the "Celebrating Fall: A Farmgirl Gathering" strain? http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=64481&whichpage=3 She mixed Big Max with Cinderellas... I'd say she hit the "jack o'lantern" pot with HER Cinderellas! ;) She also has a picture of these adorable pumpkin rolls she made along with a link for the recipe... I can't wait to make them! SO adorable!!!

Hi Farmsisters!

Okay, Nini, this pic's for you. It's a white pumpkin:

And here's some of my orange ones still working on turning orange. We plan on harvesting them tomorrow when the weather is better. (Big nasty, summer-like storms today and yesterday).

The different colors all came from the same package of seeds, called "Halloween Mix". I don't know if you can cook/eat them, I don't see why not, but I grow these for decoration. Pumpkins are big here in New England for decoration through to Christmas. I love the white ones. I think they look elegant on my Thanksgiving table as a centerpiece, and have used them for decoration through Christmas, by surrounding them with holly and greens. Elegant! Also, DD likes to draw scary ghost faces on them for Halloween with a magic marker or paint.

I've tried every year to grow pumpkins, but never had much luck 'til now. Did lose a few to the deer.

So much fun! Nini, I love yours, darlin'! Are they the Cinderella variety?

Hugs,
Nicole

LOL! Yes, Dorinda! They WILL ripen as they sit. I was reading up on it last night because I was concerned that they wouldn't ripen. The site said that they might not ripen on the vine, but they will ripen on the shelf. They said just to be sure to let them sit out in the garden to harden off first, and then they should be good to go. They're supposed to be excellent keepers. If all goes as planned, they should last us right through February! I'm SO excited! I have grown New England baking pumpkins for years, but these far surpass them in growth and beauty! I say GO for it!!! I got my seeds from Baker's Creek: http://www.rareseeds.com/musquee-de-provence/?F_Keyword=musquee%20de%20provence . You can read up on them there, but there are also a lot of different informative websites out there that just rave about these pumpkins!!! They're just SO pretty and big and HEAVY!!! I would probably continue to grow them even if they weren't edible and even if they didn't turn color! LOL! Super easy to grow - they outgrew and outlasted just about every other veggie in the garden. The one in my raised bed looked like a tiny little golf ball when we started digging things up in August, and the plant was looking pretty sad. I figured why not just give it a shot and let it grow - I've got nothing to lose, after all. I tossed a little compost at the roots and let it do its thing. Suddenly it started getting really big, and now I can barely lift it! LOL! My neighbor is just amazed. He thought there was only one in his yard, but with a little more investigation, he started finding them under leaves, hanging from the chain link fence, and even a couple of babies growing in the wisteria vines! We found a couple of new babies still growing out there on our side of the fence, too. I'm just going to let them grow and see what happens. I've never had such success with pumpkins before - it's truly very, very exciting! :)

Okay Nini, I have never seen green pumpkins. Will they turn orange the longer they sit? Like a green Tomato turns red once its pick.
Just curious in case I grow them next year. Love the pumpkins by the way. I have never grown them before. I don't even know if I can grow them in this zone. I would have to check and see if they even grow here. Because I don't know of any friends or neighbors that have ever grew them here. Hum I am really going to check that out.

LOL! I know what you mean! Then again, I am fairly certain, I'm too old to be your twin... Perhaps you're big farmgirl sister-in-heart that you never really expected but are oh-so-happy to have? ;)

You know, I have to share with you... My neighbor found ANOTHER big pumpkin out there hanging in vines twisted in the chain link fence separating our yards, and then yesterday my hubby was out there and found two healthy-looking babies! One is about about four inches, the other is about six inches in width! I am soooo excited!

I tried to get you some good pictures of the ones we knew about back on the 19th, but this is the only decent one I could get for you, since the majority of them are in our neighbor's yard. ;)

I went out to check on it this morning, and I'm happy to report it is now considerably larger! YAY! The ones in my neighbors yard are HUGE. When he went to lift one he said it was at least 20 lbs. I don't know if he's exaggerating or not, but I am sure happy that they're thriving! I sure wish I could get you pics of those - they are sitting up all pretty in his grass; they're not laying on their sides like this one is!

Please post pics of yours when you can, okay? I'd love to see them! Just SO exciting!

Yes! You GO girl! What a great feeling, huh, Nicole? I've got six little pie pumpkins from my garden ripening on my back steps and four large green Cinderella pumpkins still growing heartily on the vine. I check on them every day and grin with every fiber of my being. I totally get your excitement! Celebrating with you all the way from PA! Hugs - Nini

Nicole that's wonderful. Sure has saved you a lot of money. I am going to try and grow them next season myself. I love the white pumpkins, every year we buy three or four and after Thanksgiving I stack them, draw a snow mans face and add a hat and scarf. They turn out so darn cute.
