Posted - Jun 24 2013 : 11:20:15 AM I am hoping that someone has experience dealing with a few issues I am having in my garden.
First of all, something is eating my strawberries. In the past I know the squirrels and birds were the cultprit, but now we have chicken wire over and around the strawberry garden and every time a berry starts to turn a little red it disappears. I have tried to catch slugs in beer thinking that was possibly the issue, but I have not caught any aside from one snail. The berry and the green berry top are gone, just a stem is left reminding me of what could have been. Any ideas or suggestions? I am feeling so frustrated having grown these beautiful strawberry plants for a couple of years and never haven't gotten a berry for myself!![](icons/icon_smile_sad.gif)
Something is also chewing on my hollyhock leaves and my zinnia leaves. I haven't seen a bug on them, but the leaves are starting to resemble lace. I have sprayed a little soapy/garlic water out there but it doesn't seem to do much. Fortunately, whatever the culprit, it seem to only be eating these two plants (so far).
And last but not least, my climbing beans have a strange white pattern on the lower leaves. It almost looks like water marks like you would see on glass, but it doesn't seem to be a build up and it doesn't seem that anything is eating the leaves. I don't know what is causing this or if it is bad for the plant.
Any help would be very much appreciated, I am definately still in the learning stages of gardening.
Thanks in advance, Sarah

Posted - Jul 01 2013 : 11:10:14 AM Mice could be eating the strawberries. Sounds like you have fungus on your beans. Try a mixture of sour milk, baking soda and water, then spray on the affected parts.
Good luck, and your local extension is an awesome idea, too.

Posted - Jun 30 2013 : 07:00:37 AM Thanks so much Judy! I will check into an extension office here, that is a great idea. And I know we had some aphids earlier in the year, I released 2000 lady bugs and I haven't seen them again but I will take a closer look at the plants that are getting eaten just to be sure I haven't missed anything. Thanks for responding!

Sarah,
I am unsure of what is causing these problems in your garden. We have what is called County Extension Agents here in KY that can give you information on how to get rid of these issues. One possible thing that might be lace looking would be some type of aphid says my DH. He says if there is any way possible a rabbit will get into the smallest of spaces to get to your strawberries. Here too...we have Japanese beetles that love to eat on the leaves of roses and other bushes. To get rid of the beetles use dishwashing liquid and water in a spray bottle. It does help at times.
Hugs!
