finally starting to unpack and enjoy and i had a thought POP into my head the other morning on my drive to work--
over the years, we have accumulated a small collection of bird houses- all decorative- nothing elaborate but no room to display in this house- so! why can't i mount them on the ugly solid wood fence in the back yard? i'm planting along the fence probly today- some hostas and begonias (don't get lots of sun)...and the fence is so ugly and boring!
my question- should i maybe spray Polyurethane on them first? (they really were made for indoors)i love weathered but i don't want ruined...after a season of wind and rain and some sun they might not be worth keeping up there next year!
appreciate suggestions!

You might try outdoor Modge Podge instead of Polyurethane. I don't know that it comes in a spray though, but it would protect them, while still allowing them to weather some... plus it smells better than polyurethane in my experience.

mara they aren't really made to be houses- they are really all decorative that ppl have given to us at different times...

My thought: Don't spray them with polyurethane! Leave them as nature intended a bird's house to be. You may have to deal with watching them disintegrate over time, but so what? Think of how much better off your local birds will be for your sacrifice :)
Rather than grouping all these birdhouses in one spot as a decorative feature, why not put them all around the property in spots where the kind of bird that the house was built for would want to be? |
