Do any of you ladies have any advice about African violets?
My Grandma had lots of lovely violets and just recently I was at Wal-mart and there were a bunch of roughed up ones on clearance,I bought four of them.
I'm usually pretty good with tropical plants but have never had these before so any helpful advice would be appreciated!

mine sit on a shelf away from the window (away from direct lite) and I use 'violet' pots the kind that has a pot inside a pot and wicks up water to keep the roots hydrated w/o getting soggy.. right now mine are blooming...so pretty. oh and water from under, never get water on the leaves. Actually they are pretty easy peasy to grow... enjoy!

I have used an east window, too. Just don't put them too close, because they don't like extremes of hot and cold. Along with the other good advice already posted, be very careful never to let water get on the leaves, and don't touch the leaves with your fingers. If you accidentally get a water drop on a leaf, sop it up gently with a bit of dry tissue or Q-tip. I like to place my violets in a big tray filled with pebbles and about a half inch of water. This creates a humid micro-climate that violets love. I have never used any kind of fertilizer, just good potting soil sold especially for African violets. They're so beautiful. Enjoy!

I use a wick-watering system for mine, in an east-facing window, and keep the dying/dead flowers cut out, so they will bloom a long time. Every three months, or when there is dust on the leaves, I take mine to the kitchen sink, take them off the reservoirs, and gently wash them from the top and then set them on the front porch, out of the sun, not touching one another and let them air dry all day. While this is going on, I clean out my reservoirs and give the window sill and window a good cleaning. I feed with a liquid violet food, 6 drops to a quart of water each time I refill the reservoirs. Good luck.

Ditto on everything Tina told you. After I found out about watering from the bottom mine have done great! In fact mine separated into two so I just re-potted them. They are still living so I must have done ok with the transplant.

O, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?

my mom is the african violet queen, give her a dead dryed out one, a over watered and rotted one, a single leaf, and within a very short period of time, they are lush green and blooming like crazy...they like to have their root systems on the verge of being root bound, must stay slightly damp at all times, in a northern window, water from the bottom from the water saucers only, use loose loamy potting soil and watch for plant knats, they will kill them quick by sucking out their juices...
