Does this look like stinging nettle? I found this on the side of my driveway yesterday and so hope it is.

I was horse manager at the girl scout camp by us on the a mountain at about 10,000 ft. There were valleys FULL of that stuff. Ouch! Don't let it get away from you too much. I wouldn't want the stuff on my place, I'd rather go pick it somewhere else, just like milk thistle. Fabulous herb if it's growing somewhere else

Square stem, opposite leaves, sure looks like it.... if that area of your yard is pretty moist (it looks pretty lush in the picture), that would be another good indicator... If you test for stinging, use delicate skin like the back of your hand or the underside of your wrist, that will be the best to pick up the stinging hairs....you should notice it quite instantly :) You can pick nettle with your finger tips without getting stung...the hairs can't penetrate the calloused skin. |

The ones in my yard? It's only about 7" tall right now, but I do see some fuzz I guess. Maybe they get the stingers when they are a bit bigger? I'm going to check it again and feel it.

It does have square stems. I'm pretty sure it is nettles. But they are small right now. I have a stick fence up around them so they don't get mowed down. And I'm looking for more.
Barbara, nettles are so good for you. Full of vitamins and they can be used for nursing mothers to help with milk. Also a spring tonic tea, which is what I do with the leaves. They can also be eaten like other greens.

What do you do with stinging nettle? I thought it just stung if you touched it and we always got rid of it.

If it isn't stinging nettle, it is in the nettle family at least and should have similar properties.

Looks like it to me--look at the stem it should be squarish and have prickles on it. |

You might need to touch it to be sure. I have a weed here that looks like that, but it is not nettle. Hope it is though!

Yes, I do believe it is! I am so excited to find this here. Now I am looking all over for more. I guess some bird dropped seed and it liked it there. I'll see how it does there and try to find more to make a little patch. I love this stiff!
I also have been finding more and more elderberry bushes popping up all over. Now to keep the birds from eating all the berries like last year. More bird netting to come!
