I know some of you farmgirls start seeds all the time, here is what I did. I put shop lights up with 1 cool light and 1 warm light in each fixture, I hung them about 6 iches from the tops of my flats. Two of my flats have those haeting pads for seed-starting. I put wire hoops over each flat and covered them with a clear piece of plastic. All of this is on a shelf in the garage, with a double layer of plastic wrapped around the entire shelf and there is a small-dorm refridgerator on the same shelf. I watered from the bottom every time there was no water to see in the flat. About half of my seeds did not come up. Tomatoes, bell peppers, egg plant, some herbs and flowers. All help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I have never had any luck with starting my own seeds. I get new seeds, in to starters and they always die. In my opinion half is awsome!

It all comes back to the ground!

To test to see if the seeds are still vital, wrap a few in a very moist paper towel and keep it very wet for a day or two (maybe more) and if they are fertile, you will see roots start and the initial leaves. Then you can delicately put them in your seed starting soil.

Check how old the seeds are since there is a specific shelf life for store bought seeds that seems to be shorter than saved seeds. Maybe they were expired seeds the store had on hand from last year?

God bless,

Kathy - I had some problems when trying to start my seeds out in the garage last year, so we moved them in and kept them warm with a heating pad set on low (be safe, though - don't leave it on unattended!!!). Everything started coming up in no time. I bet Dawn is right, too - some seeds really do take a lot longer. And I know the peppers need that warmth most of all. Hang in there! Good luck! - Nini

How long ago did you start your seeds? Some take much longer then others to sprout.
