ok, so I can't do much garden wise until June...but I am such a die hard....
Here are 2 trees I started from pit/seed.

I started the avocado tree from a pit early this summer.... and the Gala Apple tree (smaller one) I started from seed in mid-summer....
I can transpant the apple tree someday up here...but what to do with the avocado tree.... I may have to make a trip back home (SO.CAL) next summer and plant the tree in my mom's yard.

Grace , That is great. I love growing anything . Anything edible. I am not real good with flowering plants . But I grow lots of veggies. Avocado's grow good here. But not apple trees. Here is a new cocktail tree I am planting after winter. It is half a Meyer lemon and the other half key lime. Can't wait to make key lime pies and lemon cakes from it.

Oh & Shirley, I own a parcel of property(undeveloped land) in Ocala.... that's the good news...
the bad news... Progress Energy is (probablly) gonna build a power plant, literally across the road from my property.... which now makes my land worth, oh, I don't know, 3cents maybe? uugghh!
It is what it is.... there is going to be a Class Action Law Suite,,, but I suspect we'll (other land owners as well) get Eminant Domained of our land at what the P.E. deems it's value... again... 3cents if we are lucky after everything is said & done! Oh Well...

Oh Shirley, I know what you mean,,, the scent of a blooming lemon tree (we always had 'Edwards lemon" trees) is heavenly to say the least...

That is one of the many reasond I miss 'home' in SO.CAL... the abundance of fruit & veggie 9 months out of the year!
I never realized how much I took it for granted until I moved up here 5 years ago...

I drove (the back way) from Moorpark to Ventura..where i worked,,, everyday and I passed through Broccoli, strawberry, onion, lemon, avocado farms daily... oh the the wonderful smells.... well, except when they harvested the onions & broccoli...,,, not so sweet! lol! There was one farm that grew giant maigolds... which were harvested for seed & chicken feed.... I loved the fiels of bright orangy~red.... it made my 52 minute commut enjoyable....

Living in Florida, I get to garden all year! Love it. Right now I have broccoli, onions and we just got our first citrus tree, a lemon tree. Boy, are the thorns on that little tree ferocious!!! But it is wonderful smelling when it blooms. Reminds me of that folk song....Lemon tree very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet.....

Grace, I know better than to ever go back to any of the homes we poured our hearts and souls into!! It does hurt to have your efforts thrown away or in this case destroyed. I still have parsley - two pots and rosemary in my kitchen. I think I "did in" the basil. Luckily the seasons will keep changing.

Have a lovely holiday. Talk to you next week?

I have grown several Avocado trees from a pit....and I planted them,,, with-in 6 years they were 10 tall and starting to fruit(then we moved). I had planted 2 different variety for cross pollination....

In our Thousand Oaks home I got my hands on a little 'sprout' that was coming up in my compost pile,,, I potted it,,, not knowing what it was... took it with me to our (then) new home in Moorpark. After it was 4 ft tall I transplanted it to the yard... by year 8 I had 'figs'...I was so delighted because I saved a little 'sprout' and in exchange it gave me fruit.
I was mortified when I found out that the people we sold our home to (to move up here) had cut it down and removed the roots... I still want to cry when I think about it.

I need a 'loft' or green house for my 'delicates'....
I have 4 apple trees in my mini orchard,,,, matsu & gala (where the seed came from... so I will nuture the seedling tell it is safe to plant.
As for my avocado,,, 4 years... well I could keep in indoors that long but I like my udea of an 'excuse' to go visit my mom in SO.Cal... lol!
Hey JoAnn, same happened to me, my pineapple sage didn't bloom much when our hummers were around, now that it is indoors it is blooming like crazy! What's up with that? lol!

I do have a small pot of parsley & chives on the kitchen window shelf... oh and I also have rosemary mixed in with the pineapple sage.... :>)

Grace, if you want the apple tree to some day produce fruit you will need a second different tree for pollination.

We had an avocado for a few years and I just cut it down. We had left it outside through our dry summer and it was zapped with the week of freezes. It no longer fit in the house where it thrived as I watered the heck out of it, and I knew I didn't have a place outside for it. We only had the one and it too needs a second tree for pollination.

My pineapple sage is blooming too! I thought the hummingbirds would love it but it always blooms when they are long gone. I have been growing my avocado for about 4 years now. It will never produce a fruit but it's fun to have it around. I also have been growing a banana plant for about the same amount of time. I have a tropical corner in my loft.

Grace you might want give this a try:
http://www.herbalmommasda.blogspot.com/2010/01/window-box-indoor-gardening.html

Start some chard, salad greens, green onions, parsley & basil.
I'm getting the itch, but trying to suppress it until after Thanksgiving :)
