Posted - Sep 18 2012 : 1:33:12 PM No, I was taught by a gardening genius many years ago, my elderly third cousin, Eleanora. She once put out 100 starts and 90 sonething survived. She was awesome. But if you saw my thread about rosette disease, you know that all my work may be in vain. They may all die, anyhow. I am way bummed.

Posted - Sep 18 2012 : 03:18:02 AM I agree, a definite rose genius.
I have never known anyone who was successful at this. Congratulations. Marianne |

Posted - Sep 16 2012 : 12:34:59 PM I just take cuttings a few inches long(if I don't plant them immediately, I re-cut the bottom on a slant before putting it in the ground), cut off all the leaves, dip the end that's going in the ground in a little rooting compound and push it in the ground and sprinkle water to wet it. I have a small bed where I put all my rose starts. Just a square little plot surrounded by railroad ties and with good dirt(not the hard stuff that's everywhere else at our place). Then I cover the start with a wide mouth glass jar and sort of press it in the ground lightly. I put a little mulch round the bottom of the jar, too. In the spring, as soon as the danger of frost is passed, I take the jars off for a little while each day until they harden off. This year, I lifted the tiny rose bushes out and put them in bigger pots in a protected place for a few weeks so they could get stronger before I put them in the ground. I had about an 85% success rate. That's the best I ever had. About 28 new bushes.

Posted - Sep 16 2012 : 09:15:05 AM My husband was just talking about this subject. We have tried, to no avail. Good luck. I'll check later on this post to see what others have tried. Marly
