For those of you trying to get maximum yield from your zucchini plants, heed this little bit of advice if you don't already know about it.

When the zucchini reaches those epic, monstrous sizes....this signals the plant to die off and stop producing.

Instead, start going for the smaller, more tender ones and extend the life of your plants by at least another month. (Assuming those nasty vine boring beetle haven't attacked). It also helps to space the plant further apart so you can see beneath them better. And of course to not forget to thoroughly check every day. They have a way of hiding and really getting out of hand.

I also recommend looking up Seed Saver's or Johnny's Seed Select and trying the Cue Ball zucchini variety. If you stay after these, they will bear for months! The round shape is very novel too. Smallest ones are as big as a ping pong, largest ones are softball size. Anything bigger is too pithy and will cause the plant to die off for the same reason. The largest one that got away from me was small cantelope size....and it wound up looking like a pumpkin in shape!
