I've had the same problem last year and now this year in my greenhouse. My tomatoes don't get very big, but before they're ripe the bottoms start to turn brown like they're going bad. I've kept watering them regular all summer, could it be my soil or what? |

I sure wish I could send you some more warm weather so you could grow some more tomatoes. It was 100 here today. We have had 2 weeks without 100 weather, so I was beginning to think Fall might be on the way, but it's back for now :( But for us Texans, the good news is we often have fresh, homegrown tomatoes for Thanksgiving dinner. |

Thanks Beth that's good to remember. I've been making yogurt and going to make some cheese. I know a nieghbor that does make cheese so she might have some whey to spare. My tomatoes don't have much more growing season now though, we've had several frosts, and things in the garden have all been touched well. Tomatoes in the green house are slowing down too:( |

No, the calcium and lime won't hurt the plants unless you go way over the recommended amounts. My tomatoes had blossom end rot earlier this summer, but I started putting the whey leftover from cheese making on the soil and it cleared it right up (like in 2-3 days). The whey has calcium in it. Do you or someone you know make cheese? If it's a friend, ask if you can have the whey a time or two. (of course, if she is having blossom end rot, too, she may not want to share)

I just read somewhere that epsom salts work for tomatoes and peppers, just sprinkle around the plants, or add to the soil in the spring. Interesting.

My daughter's were turning black and some lady told her to ad lime to her soil, and that fixed the problem. |

Thanks, Dianne, I will know to add some calcium to the soil in the spring. Never had that happen before.

Sounds like blossom end rot to me. Usually not enough calcium in the soil. You can get a tomato fertilizer with calcium in it. Also can be caused by irregular watering. It usually doesn't hurt the tomato, just cut it off after picking.
