Hi Ladies! I've never had the opportunity to have my own garden, but my dad has had an incredible one for years. It is one of my favorite places to be and I help him plant and harvest and other misc. stuff. I've always admired my dad (or as I like to call him, Paw)because he is a hard worker and so full of knowledge. I would like to preserve some of his garden knowledge in a garden journal next summer, so I'm going to get a jump start on putting one together now.

I plan on having a calendar to document when seeds are started both inside and out. I would also like to have sections for each veggie that will have the different varieties, a section for issues we ran into (bugs, disease), anything we used to treat the plant, what kind of fertilizer used and how often, a rating system for the taste and how the plant produced. I'm sure there are other things I had in mind that I can't think of now. I was wondering what types of things you ladies would like to see in a garden journal. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I've enjoyed seeing pictures of all of your gardens so here are just a few pictures of my dad's garden last year. Haven't taken any this year yet for some reason.

If you look, you can see a wren on the TV antenna. They come and build a nest in the bird house every year. I love to hear them singing while I'm out in the garden. This year I got to see the 4 babies after they left the nest. They hung around for a couple of weeks in one of the pine tree.

Sorry for the novel! I just love the garden and talking about it and the birds that come to visit. I also love seeing your pictures and hearing about what is growing in your neck of the woods!

Thank you Dorinda, Roxanna, and Laurie! It sounds like a lot of people have wonderful memories of loved ones because of their gardens!

Roxanna, I told him you referred to him as a "master gardener." He was very flattered!

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story and such lovely pictures~ it reminds me of my dear grandfather who had amazing gardens his whole life. That is where I got my love of all things nature from, and I cherish the memories with him. I wish we would have started a garden journal, back when he was still alive. What a treasure that would be!
Hugs,

Emily love the pictures of the gardens. my dad also grew lovely gardens and so did my grandparents. I think I would like to hear in your journal what type of fertilizers your Dad used. i have been trying to use only organic type of fertilizers in my garden. But I am not having alot of success with them. I have a friend who mixes up their own organic fertilizers. Their garden looks beautiful every year. Have fun with the journal.

Thanks Marly, Kris, and Peggy!

Kris, I don't know how, but my dad doesn't get many weeds?? I used to think you had to get down on your hands and knees to pull them out. My dad thought I was pretty goofy when he asked me to weed one of the beds and that's what I started to do. He explained that I could just take a garden rake or hoe and rough up the soil and get them out that way. You can see what my dad has to work with with me, right? lol! :D Eh....you know what they say about free help!

Peggy, thanks for the ideas! I didn't think of adding pictures and having the seed packages would be great too! You can come and take a walk through his garden any time! :)

Emily...I love the Story of your dad and your admiration for all the knowledge he shares with you.
The Garden Pictures, make me want to come walk in his garden too. How Lovely!

I think your Garden Journal is a great idea. I kept one when I gardened. One thing I liked adding to mine...was the Empty Seed Packets and/or seed stakes that come in the plants from the Nursery. So, just
a thought. I also took pictures of the newly planted garden, one mid-season and one at the final Harvest.

You could also keep Journaling here on MJF...many of us would enjoy the Journey with you.

blessings,
peggy

I love the gardens! I sure wish I had a pretty garden with nice neat rows and lots of garden sculptures. I love gardens like that. But I am a messy gardener and hate to weed. It would be very peaceful walking in that garden though. Thanks for sharing!

Emily, I enjoyed all of your description of your dad's garden and your future gardening plans. And- I love the pictures. It took me a few moments to find the wren. How cute!
Thanks for sharing.
