A corner of my herb garden. I have been harvesting all summer and let it go a little wild and flower for the bees.

A couple of beds of snap beans. I have harvested three times and canned 36 pints so far. Tank and Molly wanted to snack on a couple!

A mixed bed of broccoli, celery, peppers, okra, eggplant and one tomatoe in the center.

My tomatoes happlily growing up strings. This was over a month ago, since then they are loaded with home grown goodness!

I pulled up my tomato's this pass weekend. It wasn't a good tomato season for us this year; too much rain.

I am pulling up all my tomatoes this week. I need to plant more fall stuff so need the room. And they are all anyway. I will never plant so many tomato plants ever again. Those things have a mind of their own! I sure will miss my bacon and tomato samiches though.

Delicia,
I gave a previous poster some advice so here is what I wrote:
Karen,
Where abouts do you live? Tomatoes are pretty heavy feeders and require calcium to set blossoms. Pruning the suckers helps also because the plant can put more energy into blossoms and fruit than leaves and stems. I saw a post on some gardening web-site where a guy puts a whole dead fish in the hole before he plants his tomatoe plant! I don't do this, but I do get special tomato food from my garden center. I also use compost. I water the tomato plants with drip hoses at the base which helps from soil born diseases damaging the leaves. I also use straw for mulch to maintain the moisture. Tomatoes like a couple inches of water per week. I live in Southern Wisconsin and we have had one of the worst droughts and heat since the 30's also. I had to be very dilligent about watering my gardens this year.

Let me know if you need any more tips! As for the raised beds, I swear by Mel Bartholomew's "Square Foot Gardening" book.

Diane, I just saw the photos of your garden it is really nice. How do you do the raised beds? I have a small area that I planted some tomatoes and they have not done well so I would like to try something different next year. Can you share some tips?

Karen,
The best thing to do is get Mel Bartholomew's book "Square Foot Gardening". I will never go back to the old way, it is so much easier to garden this way. Once you build the beds and make the soil you are set and re-use them year after year. There is almost no weeding and no wasted space between rows. His book has detailed instructions on how to build the beds, make the soil and plant spacing. In the late fall I just cover the beds with leaves and let them rest for the winter. You do not till just mix in some compost every spring. I get so much more production in less space. I have just re-planted three beds for fall with green beans and carrots. I simply pulled the spent plants, added some compost and planted away. I have been really busy canning tomatoes for the last couple of weeks!

Diane,

Your raised beds are gorgeous! Think I'll try doing the raised beds next year instead of having all those long, hard to maintain rows. Do you use a tiller? Would love to know just how you go about building the beds and filling in with soil, fertilizer, etc. I bought and planted lots of heirloom and organic tomatoes this year which I purchased at Whole Foods and at Old Salem Museums and Gardens, but, as I mentioned in another post, had no luck with them. I've never tried stringing tomatoes, only using cages. Must try that too. And thanks for the reminder about removing suckers. I forgot to do that this year!!! Love your pooches!!!

I may have to 'borrow' Tank & Molly to patrol my garden from a mauradering mole/gopher who has found his way into my garden!
I would have thought my tortise, 'Scotter' would be a better Garden Watch Dog, but alas, Scooter can't bark! lol!

I love the two dogs in the garden. How cute! I didn't notice them the first time I looked at the pictures. A beautiful garden.

This is such an awesome garden!! It's so hot in Tampa that even trying to get my tomatoes to grow is a chore. Our planting season starts in a couple of months, can't wait! Your garden is such an inspiration.

Diane, your garden looks great!!! I too have raised beds and find it so much easier to keep under control as far as weeds/watering etc.
Sounds like you are harvesting lots and lots of goodies! Congratulations!

I grow all heirlooms too! I have a couple of orange and yellow varieties that make interesting colored salsa and sauce! They taste great though. I will post photo soon, I am in the middle of canning corn and tomatoes.

Diane I look forward to seeing how they look now. I just harvested some tomatoes that are heirloom. I put some in my Vita mixer and it looked like orange juice because alot of them are yellow and orange. I added some of the red ones in the next batch cause I don't want to have orange spagetti sauce......lol.
