I'm SO excited, girls - just have to share! Here are some pictures of this year's firstfruits from our garden:

These pictures were taken a little over a week ago... You'd be amazed at how much more growth we've had in just a short period of time!! I know it probably doesn't seem like much, but TRUST me - to us, this is a BIG deal!

This is actually the very first time I've had success with beets and spinach... and I've actually got kale growing, as well as rutabagas (they're already 3" around!!!). I planted seeds early in March when we had a warm spell, then spent a lot of time running out in winter's late afternoons covering the crops with blankets to protect everything from hard frosts and deep freezes, all the while listening to neighboring naysayers who said my efforts were doomed to fail. Little did they know I had "Farmgirl Power" behind me! LOL! 'Lo and behold... FARMGIRL SUCCESS!!!

And I don't know if you can tell from the pictures, but because we have used your awesome advice for composting, we have the richest, most beautiful, crumbly, brownie-mix-like soil ever! My neighbors cannot get over it! And some of our seeds were actually saved from last year's garden (mostly heirlooms)! Simply amazing! SO cool! The best part? Everything is natural and organic! YES!

My husband and son built me the fence for Mother's Day, and dug the chicken wire into the ground to keep the rabbits and bunnies away... We came out the other morning to find one very befuddled mama rabbit staring longingly into the lovely greenery beyond the wire. We could tell her wheels had been turning, but she just couldn't manage to figure out how to get in!!! ('Still crossing my fingers, though - Bugs Bunny doesn't hold a candle to HER resourcefulness!)

I'm so glad I heeded all of your farmgirl wisdom and insight, and ignored the taunts and ridicule of unbelievers... YAY!

So... once again: Thank you, farmgirls!!! YOU ROCK!!! I couldn't have done it without you! I can't wait to see what exciting things are to come!

With love and gratitude beyond measure,

What an amazing garden and garden area. I love it. Don't you just love harvesting the crops? I love to; my hubby and I get a basket and harvest together. Hope you harvest a lot this summer.

Thanks, girls! I'm just so happy with what's happening out there... Well, 'cept we've got some Starlings that really fancy my bean plants, the stinkers! LOL!

Yes, Roxanna! I really hope to can some pickled beets this year.. But I'm not sure we have enough right now to do it! Our little patch of beets is really small, but I am thinking I may plant some more seeds mid-July and then can whatever I'm blessed with come autumn. I absolutely LOVE pickled beets, though, so I'm going to try for sure! :)

Marianne - I actually cooked the beet greens for the very first time last week! They were delicious! I'm looking forward to many more meals with them, for sure! Silly question, perhaps, but can I freeze them like spinach? That'd be great!!!

Thanks so much again!

Hugs -

What beautiful greens!! And lovely beets. Congratulations. Your garden is gorgeous. You have many reasons to be proud: your soil, fencing, beds and crops.
